Shelton Stuns Alcaraz in Epic US Open Night | Durham News

Ben Shelton stunned the tennis world by defeating reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a marathon US Open thriller that ended at 3:33 AM — the latest finish in tournament history — sealing it with a thunderous ace. After a brutal five-set battle, Shelton won 7-6 in the final tiebreaker, snapping Alcaraz’s 18-match Grand Slam winning streak. Alcaraz called it a “war” but also the most fun match of his career, while praising the crowd’s late-night support and pledging to focus on recovery after a wrist injury. Shelton now faces fellow American Frances Tiafoe, who also fought through a five-set epic to reach the semis — guaranteeing a U.S. player in the final and reigniting hopes for an American men’s singles title at Flushing Meadows. With three of four men’s quarterfinals decided by tiebreakers, this tournament has been electric — and Shelton’s win marks his third major semifinal, a milestone moment for the rising star.
