Shenandoah County schools are tightening the rules on phones — but with a major shift in consequences. Students must still keep phones off and away from bell to bell, including during lunch and passing periods. Smartwatches, earbuds, rings, and glasses are allowed — as long as their communication features are disabled. Violations can still result in phone confiscation or trips to the principal’s office, but suspension or expulsion for phone misuse alone is now illegal under state law. However, if a phone violation pairs with disruptive behavior, harsher penalties remain possible — especially with repeated offenses. Meanwhile, the school board has hired McPherson & Jacobson LLC to find their next superintendent, paying them $32,140 through June 2027. The board also approved Juneteenth as a paid holiday for 12-month staff in the upcoming two-year cycles and boosted the 2027 special budget by over $1 million — funded entirely by federal and state grants.
