Shimabara Rebellion
from HistoryMaps Podcast
In this episode, we examine the Shimabara Rebellion, one of the most dramatic uprisings of seventeenth-century Japan, sparked by crushing taxation, famine, and the brutal persecution of Christians under the Tokugawa shogunate. Centered around the charismatic teenage figurehead Amakusa Shirō, the revolt united desperate peasants and masterless samurai who fortified themselves within the ruins of Hara Castle and mounted a fierce resistance against overwhelming government forces. We follow how the shogunate responded with more than 120,000 troops and even naval support from the Dutch to bring the rebellion to a bloody end, then trace the devastating aftermath as tens of thousands were executed, Christianity was forced underground, and Japan moved further toward a rigid policy of national isolation. The episode also highlights the rare punishment of the local daimyō for misgovernance, showing how this rebellion exposed both the brutality and the anxieties of early Edo rule.
