Circumcision was a covenant and a sign of tribal identity. A mark that the Israelites took thousands of years ago, to show God, that they were committed to being a new type of people in the world. Paul brilliantly identifies that it is absolutely necessary to use human construct, language and practices to describe a God that is beyond explainable and beyond our understanding, yet at the same time recognises that we can become fully entrenched in practice or ritual itself that it can actually cause us to move away from knowing God.
