In which Miss Keeldar accepts the charge of guardianship at the rectory during Mr. Helstone’s absence, preparing herself and Caroline for any possible threat with weapons and watchfulness on a tranquil summer’s eve. When a troop of men unexpectedly approaches the rectory, Shirley and Caroline’s courage is stirred to set forth across the fields to warn another in peril, their spirits undaunted amidst the stillness and shadows of night.
