Shirvanshahs

In this episode, we explore the remarkable history of the Shirvanshahs, the Islamic dynasty that ruled Shirvan in present-day Azerbaijan from 861 to 1538. We trace their transformation from rulers of Arab origin into a deeply Persianized court that adopted Iranian titles, traditions, and artistic values. The episode examines how the Yazidid and Darbandid branches balanced independence with periods of vassalage under the Seljuk, Mongol, and Timurid empires, while turning their kingdom into an important cultural center that supported celebrated Persian poets such as Nizami Ganjavi and Khaqani. We also discuss the dynasty’s annexation by the Safavid Empire and its enduring architectural legacy, especially the Palace of the Shirvanshahs in Baku.
