Shonagh O'Connor - A Termination after 12 weeks: How women are still being denied abortion care in Ireland

from Stretch Marks

On this award winning podcast we talk about the parts of life stretching us to our limits, the necessary growth and the marks left behind. Stretch marks don't just happen on your body - they happen throughout your life (especially in this insane world). TRIGGER WARNING - PREGNANCY TERMINATION This episode discusses the termination of a pregnancy due to fatal fetal abnormality. But if you can stay - please do, because every woman in Ireland needs to hear this story to understand why our abortion legislation is letting down women who need and deserve to be cared for - here - in this country. My guest this week is mother of two Shonagh O'Connor. She contacted me and she asked me would I consider covering the topic of termination specifically to highlight how for some women they fall outside of the legislation and don’t receive care here. She explained her story and my response was to invite her to share it with you too - in her own words. At 12 weeks and 2 days, at a scan, she was told that her pregnancy was unlikely to continue to term. But as she was 12 and 2 days that there was nothing they could do for her in Ireland. She would have to travel to the UK for a termination. If she had been 11 week she could be treated here, despite the historic referendum, a landslide of 66.4% voting in favour to repeal the 8th amendment and provide abortion care for women in Ireland. This conversation acts as an example of how we are still exporting care of women in need of reproductive healthcare in this country. If you have been affected by the themes in this episode please find the following supports:Bereavement Support https://lmcsupport.ie/https://wellwomancentre.ie/unplanned-pregnancy/ema-step-by-step/https://www.ifpa.ie/advocacy/abortion-in-ireland-legal-timeline/https://www.abortionrightscampaign.ie/abortion-law-in-ireland/British Pregnancy Advisory ServiceYou can find me on instagram @sinead.omoore and @stretchmarkspodcastProduced by the brand storyFor brand collaborations and sponsorship please email [email protected] Hosted on Acast.
