Short-Term Rentals: #1 Use of Free-Market Homes in Crested Butte

"Short-term rental" is now the main use (29%) for free-market homes in the town of Crested Butte. "Owner-occupied" homes are #2 at 27%, long-term rentals at 24%, and second-homes comprise 20%. Short-term rentals are not allowed in deed-restricted homes. This shift in home use in Crested Butte illustrates the housing crunch. In 1997, 43% of homes were long-term rentals. Over time, the use of the homes has changed, and that has cut the supply of rentals from the market.
