Shou Talks: Normalization of Domestic Violence

from Shou Talks · host Shou

Y’all, that lil old Haitian Lady that lives in my head came out in this one. I literally had a dream and it brought me to today’s topic. Domestic Violence is something that we see so much on reality TV that it is almost normalized BUT did you know that in the U.S., on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. Did you know that approximately 1 in 5 female victims and 1 in 20 male victims need medical care. How about that from 2016 through 2018 the number of intimate partner violence victimizations in the United States increased 42%. How often do you see a video of couples fighting and it turns physical? How often do we see couples arguing and it turns physical? How often do you think to “mind your business”? Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control.
