She is mixed race, with Afro Textured hair. She was adopted by two white parents, and lived in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, where there was very little diversity, and they didn't really know how to handle her hair type.Support for adoptive families at that time was minimal, and none of the local salons were capable of working with Afro Textured hair.She found herself as a teenager learning how to braid her hair herself, and getting a train into London to visit a specialist salon.
