"Should I Allow My Kids to Trick-Or-Treat?" (The Patrick Madrid Show)

Gary from the Bronx calls in with a classic Catholic parent dilemma: Is Halloween okay for Catholic kids? Patrick Madrid doesn’t shy away from giving him a thoughtful, seasoned Catholic take.   Here’s Patrick's thoughts on the whole trick-or-treat situation:   Halloween: It Doesn't Have to Be Evil 🎃   Patrick says there’s nothing inherently wrong with Halloween. It’s a version of what used to be a pre-All Saints Day festivity, kind of like a mini-Mardi Gras: just a fun night before a more serious holy day. But it’s up to each family how they want to approach it. Just steer clear of the evil that our society has thrown into it.    Keep It Fun and Faith-Filled ✝️   When Patrick’s kids went trick-or-treating, they dressed up as saints: think St. Michael the Archangel, St. Teresa of Avila, even a mini Pope John Paul II! Not only did this add a touch of faith, but it also opened doors for some “in-the-world-but-not-of-the-world” evangelization when neighbors asked, “Who are you supposed to be?”   Respect Every Approach 🙌   Patrick respects those who decide to steer clear of Halloween altogether. If you’re opting out to keep things pure and focused on faith, he may not have done the same, but he gets it. Some families skip the whole shebang, have a cozy family night, or even turn the night into a little saint-themed party at home instead.   Follow Your Conscience    At the end of the day, Patrick’s advice boils down to conscience. Do what helps your family stay close to Jesus. If that’s trick-or-treating with saint costumes and some candy fun, great.
