Should I Kiss It or Shake It?

As the young man entered the house to meet the parents of his date for the evening, he greeted the father with a limp, weak handshake. The imposing father looked at him and asked, "Should I kiss it or shake it?" I was reminded of that true story recently during an event where there were multiple new introductions going around and a plethora of weak handshakes. My wife shared with me later that most of the people just gently squeezed her fingers instead of a full, firm handshake. What does a weak handshake from a male or female say about you? First of all, it may say that you have never been taught. It is becoming a lost art for a parent to teach his or her children how to properly shake someone's hand. Second, I heard it eloquently stated that a weak handshake screams that you have a frail inner core. It can be a litmus test of your confidence and character, or lack thereof. Just like standing up straight and conveying the proper energy, a firm, well-balanced handshake can make a great first impression. Some men do not believe this applies when greeting a woman. I disagree. Regardless of a business or personal relationship, a woman will take notice of this immediately and judge you accordingly. And ladies, the same rules apply to you. Studies have proven that a woman with a firm handshake is considered strong and confident and no less a lady. I have to remind some of you to avoid the bone-crushing handshake. This can make you appear over aggressive and can create a negative first impression. Also avoid shaking too vigorous and too long. Look someone in the eye, connect fully and firmly with his or her hand, shake once or twice and break. Practice every chance you get and you will convey the correct first impression.
