Should I “Label” My Child? Breaking the Stigma and Advocating for Your Child in a School Setting

from Notes from a Child Psychologist · host Dr. Tasha Brown

Welcome to Episode #4 of the Back to School and Your Child's Mental Health Series   Back-to-school can be an exciting time for many parents, caregivers, and their children and for some parents/caregivers and their children, it can be an anxiety-producing time. With the start of the new school year, it is SO important that we talk about what your child needs to succeed. We know that success looks different for EVERY child. One major way we set children up for success during the school year is to think critically about the many ways that we can support their Mental health, and that's what this series is about.  This week’s episode is the second part of my interview with Dr. Therese Morrison. Dr. Therese Clarke Morrison is the Director of School Psychology for KIPP NYC’s Elementary Schools. Dr. Morrison also owns an Event Planning and Design firm that specializes in planning weddings, social events, and corporate functions. Most importantly, she is a wife, and mom of two boys— ages 11 months and 2 years old.  Like the last, this episode is PACKED with information. In this episode, we talk about “labels.” Very often, parents tell me they do not want to pursue services in a school setting because they do not want their child to be labeled. Dr. Morrison and I spend some time dissecting what labels are for about how they can be useful in getting your child appropriate services in a school setting. We talk about the stigma around labels and where it comes from. We also dive into what it means for a child to receive services in the “least restrictive” environment, the importance of not using the word “lazy” to describe a child’s behavior, and so much more! Lastly, we talk about the best ways parents and caregivers can advocate for their children.  Connect with me!Note of the Week Website- https://www.drtashabrown.com Email Address- [email protected] Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/dr.tashabrown/ Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/dr.tashabrown7 Connect with Dr. Morrison Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/drtmorrison/ Event Planning Company- https://www.instagram.com/theresenicole.llc/Register for the ‘Back to School and Your Child’s Mental Health” Parent WorkshopIf you are looking for guidance on how to best support children in the transition back to school, The Back to School and Your Child's Mental Health Workshop was created just for you.
