Should We All Be Taking a GLP-1?
from The Habit Healers Hosted by Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA
Should you take a GLP-1 like semaglutide (Wegovy)? Before you ask whether these weight loss drugs work, I want you to ask a better question: how much risk did the people in the studies actually have, and do you have that same risk? In this episode of The Habit Healers Podcast, I walk you through the big semaglutide heart study, what it really showed about preventing heart attack and stroke, and why the benefit didn’t track with the number on the scale. Then I take you back to 1959, when insect scientists taught farmers to count before they sprayed, and show you why that same idea applies to any preventive medication, including the GLP-1 drugs everyone is talking about. We look at what happened with daily aspirin, what these drugs can cost you in muscle and bone, and why so many people stop within a year. I’m not here to tell you yes or no. I’m here to help you walk into your doctor’s office with your own numbers. In this episode, you’ll learn: * Who semaglutide is proven to help, including people with heart disease, obesity, and fatty liver disease with scarring * What “independent of weight loss” really means for heart protection * How to tell a big benefit from a small one using simple numbers * The GLP-1 side effects that matter most: nausea, muscle loss, and hip and pelvis fractures * Why using a GLP-1 as a short term reset leads to weight regain * The 8-step GLP-1 Threshold Check, starting with your A1c, eGFR, and BMI Dr. Marbas Substack Article: https://drlauriemarbas.substack.com/p/should-we-all-be-taking-a-glp-1 Check out the Habit Healers Community: https://www.skool.com/habithealers/about Get full access to The Habit Healers at drlauriemarbas.substack.com/subscribe
