Most resources state that both played it in the key of F Major, but that Hank played it in D, using a capo to raise the chords to F. I don't like using capos because you loose a lot of the guitar's range and it limits your breaks/solos. So, I play it in open D, which you can capo up if you like, and in open F. Changing keys is called transposing, and it is a very useful skill to match songs to the singer's voice or just to play more in your own style.
