Last year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided the opening remarks for the simulation session themed "Catastrophic Contagion" or SEERS 2025 which simulated a contagious pneumonia that would affect young people ages 3 to 14. Now comes an uncanny synchronicity—or is it? Chinese hospitals in recent weeks have reported an increase in respiratory illnesses, including “clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia” in Beijing, Liaoning, and other cities, as the World Health Organization put it. Children seem especially affected by it and some pediatric hospitals are already over capacity. Furthermore, doctors in parts of the U.S. are reporting a spike in child pneumonia cases similar to the outbreak spreading in China and parts of Europe. Could this be a replay of four years ago?
