In the wilderness, Jesus faces a voice humanity has heard since the garden: “Did God really say?” On the First Sunday in Lent, we explore the connection between Genesis 3, Matthew 4, and Romans 5. Where Adam listened to the voice and death began to reign, Jesus stands firm. Hungry, tested, and offered a shortcut to power, Christ refuses to take matters into his own hands. This moment in the wilderness is more than a test of willpower. It is a showdown with sin itself. And when Jesus says no to temptation, he begins the work of dethroning death. Lent invites us to slow down and notice the voices that shape our decisions — the doubts, desires, and distortions that pull us away from trusting God. But Lent also points us forward. Because of Jesus’ obedience, death does not have the final word. Jesus dethroned death so that we could reign in life.
