Showing Affection: A Biblical Perspective

In Zambia, we are often known for being warm, generous, and community-oriented people. We show up for funerals, weddings, illnesses, and times of need. We sacrifice for family members, help our friends, and care for our communities. Yet many of us grew up in homes where words like "I love you" were rarely spoken. Parents showed love through provision and discipline. Friends showed love through loyalty. Married couples often kept affection private and reserved. This raises an important question: Is this simply a cultural difference in expressing love, or is there something Scripture calls us to do that we may be neglecting? Does God intend for love to be shown only through actions, or also through words? And how can Christians honor their culture while remaining faithful to biblical teaching?
