Siegfried Seidl: Nazi Commandant of Theresienstadt Who Sent Thousands to Death

Siegfried Seidl was the first Nazi commandant of the Theresienstadt ghetto-concentration camp, where he oversaw mass deportations and helped build the machinery that sent tens of thousands of Jews to their deaths during the Holocaust.Born in Vienna in 1911, Seidl joined the Nazi Party and the SS at an early age, drawn by Adolf Hitler’s vision of racial engineering and authoritarian order. He quickly distinguished himself within the SS bureaucracy, working closely with Adolf Eichmann at the Vienna Central Office for Jewish Emigration, where he helped organize the forced deportation of Jews from Austria following the Anschluss.In late 1941, Seidl was appointed the first commandant of the Theresienstadt ghetto-concentration camp in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, near Prague. Theresienstadt was presented by Nazi propaganda as a “model ghetto,” but in reality it functioned as a transit camp and site of starvation, disease, terror, and death. Under Seidl’s leadership, brutal discipline, overcrowding, and deliberate neglect defined daily life. Thousands died from hunger, illness, and abuse, while tens of thousands more were deported onward to extermination camps, primarily Auschwitz.Survivor testimonies described Seidl as ruthless and indifferent to human suffering. He enforced harsh punishments, oversaw selections for deportation, and helped establish the administrative machinery that made mass murder efficient and impersonal. Although he was removed from Theresienstadt in 1943, the system he helped build continued to function with lethal effectiveness.Later in the war, Seidl served with Einsatzgruppe units in Hungary and was connected to operations linked to Bergen-Belsen, further tying him to the wider network of Nazi crimes across occupied Europe. After Germany’s defeat, Seidl was captured by Czechoslovak authorities and put on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Convicted for his role in mass deportations and the deaths of thousands, he was sentenced to death. On 4 February 1947, Siegfried Seidl was hanged.
