SIMPLE DESIRES I want to live my life like a bell, resonant and whole, ringing out from a hill on all its sides into the clear alpine air; or like an humble mountain toad, Bufo borealis, hungry for love, singing the instant it digs out of the muddy spring earth, one eye to the stars, the other, to the dark spaces in between; And I want to die my own death, like a tree brought down by fall winds on the forest floor, year after year of heavy rain, new green life sprouting out from every crack and crevice of its body; or like a stream leaping out from its sheer granite cliff, disappearing into the late summer air, nothing left to see but the steady rising mist of its now distant, muted roar. ++++ DESEOS SIMPLES Quiero vivir mi vida como una campana, resonante y completa, que resuena desde una colina por todas sus laderas hacia el aire puro de los Alpes; o como un humilde sapo de montaña, Bufo borealis, hambriento de amor, cantando en el instante en que emerge de la tierra fangosa de la primavera, un ojo a las estrellas, el otro a los oscuros espacios intermedios; Y quiero morir mi propia muerte, como un árbol derribado por los vientos otoñales en el suelo del bosque, año tras año de lluvias torrenciales, con nueva vida verde brotando de cada grieta y hendidura de su tronco; o como un arroyo que se precipita desde su escarpado acantilado de granito, desapareciendo en el aire de finales de verano, sin dejar más que la niebla ascendente y constante de su ahora lejano y apagado rugido.
