En el siglo XIX, Francis Galton, primo hermano de Darwin y estudioso de muchas áreas del conocimiento, descubrió que personas con un comportamiento totalmente normal, presentaban una particularidad: cada vez que veían un número, de inmediato le asignaban un color. Así, el número cinco podía ser rojo, el seis verde, el siete azul, el ocho naranja. Además, en la misma persona también podía darse el hecho de que le asignara colores a las notas musicales. Lo llamó sinestesia.
