After being duped by a farmer into trading his coin for an almost empty sack of rye, Gilligren cleverly uses the rye to capture twenty-four blackbirds. He later takes these birds to London, where he cleverly avoids their untimely demise as meal ingredients by proposing they be used live in a pie for an amusing presentation at the King's coronation feast. This impresses the King, leading to Gilligren securing a position in the royal household and eventually making his fortune.
