Singing a Revolution

from Love Chapel Hill · host Allison Otwell

Voices of Resistance --- Luke 1:38-43 Mary, the mother of Jesus, often appears as a meek and humble servant. Indeed, she models what it means to surrender to the will of the Spirit. However, in Luke’s gospel we get a different picture of Mary. Mary sings a song of revolution. Her song is one of social reversal, of rulers being humbled and the humble being raised up. And she herself embodied this social reversal: a poor young Jewish woman who would give birth to a new kind of King. Mary shows us how our worship becomes our way of living, one that proclaims God’s order for the world and God’s kingdom here and now.
