Sinkhole Sam

Sinkhole Sam is a legendary 15-foot-long, snake- or worm-like creature said to inhabit "The Big Sinkhole" near Inman, Kansas. Description and Legend Appearance: Described as roughly 15 feet long, as thick around as a car tire, with a fluked tail and a strange, friendly-looking, non-snake-like grin. Alternative Name: Also locally called the "Foopengerkle".First Sighted: Early reports started with fishermen in the 1920s.The 1952 Phenomenon The Encounter: In the summer of 1952, Mennonite farm boy Albert "Bert" Neufeld and his friend George Regehr spotted the beast while fishing. The Shot: Neufeld fired two shots from his .22 caliber rifle at the creature, but it seemed unaffected before slipping back into the water. The Crowds: Word spread, leading cars and curious onlookers to line the edges of the sinkhole hoping for a glimpse.
