Sinn Féin Pushes for Peaceful Irish Unity | Belfast News

Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald is urging serious, inclusive preparation for a united Ireland, stressing peace and democracy as non-negotiables—and demanding the Dublin government actively lead the conversation. Trump’s recent endorsement of a united Ireland, while politically charged, echoes past U.S. administrations and was welcomed by McDonald as a global validation. Meanwhile, Northern Irish, Welsh, and Scottish First Ministers are set to sign a landmark autonomy pact in Cardiff, pushing the UK to hold independence referendums. McDonald also called on Taoiseach Micheál Martin to step up his leadership role, arguing he must proactively shape the future—not just respond to it. With momentum building across the island, the focus remains on laying the groundwork for a unified, democratic future.
