Sip, Sip, Sigh: Could Three Words Change How Your Nervous System Works?
from The Habit Healers · host Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA
The physiological sigh may be the simplest nervous system regulation tool we have, and it takes five minutes a day. In this episode of The Habit Healers Podcast, I break down the science of cyclic sighing: two short inhales through the nose, one long slow exhale through the mouth.I’m Dr. Laurie Marbas, and I want to walk you through what’s actually happening in your body when you sigh. Your brainstem has a small cluster of neurons dedicated to producing sighs, separate from the circuit that runs normal breathing. That sigh reopens collapsed air sacs in your lungs, but it does something else too. The long exhale is the active ingredient. Because of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, your heart rate rises slightly on the inhale and falls on the exhale, so an exhale-dominant breathing pattern tilts you toward your parasympathetic nervous system, your rest and digest side. I also cover a randomized controlled trial where five minutes a day of cyclic sighing outperformed mindfulness meditation on positive mood, and a study where adults over 45 showed a greater parasympathetic response than younger adults after a single session. What you’ll learn:* How to do the physiological sigh correctly, using the sip, sip, sigh pattern* Why a long exhale activates your vagus nerve and calms your body faster than a deep inhale alone* What the research on cyclic sighing shows for stress, anxiety, and mood* Why this five minute breathing exercise may work better as you get older* How to build breathwork into your day without sitting in a quiet roomDr. Marbas Substack Article: https://drlauriemarbas.substack.com/p/sip-sip-sigh-could-three-words-changeCheck out the Habit Healers Community: https://www.skool.com/habithealers/about Get full access to The Habit Healers at drlauriemarbas.substack.com/subscribe
