Sirul Azhar: Extradite, Detain or Deport?

from Current Affairs · host Morning Run

Corporal Sirul Azhar, who was convicted of murdering Altantuya Shaariibuu, has been detained by immigration officials in Brisbane, after an Interpol red notice was issued. There are however conflicting principles, as Malaysia has a mandatory death sentence for murder and drug trafficking offences, while Australia opposes capital punishment. Malaysia is now seeking to have Sirul extradited under the Extradition Treaty, which both countries signed in 2006. Melisa Idris speaks to lawyer Edmund Bon about the extradition laws in play in the Sirul Azhar case. Annabelle Lee contributed to this report.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
