First Thing is First | In South Africa, trade unions for many years not only fought for worker's rights within the workplace but also beyond the workplace. Could Dwindling memberships, inter-union rivalry and radical changes in the nature of work  render trade unions irrelevant? As we look back on Workers’ Day we reflect on their significance. SA’s 225 registered trade unions represent about 3-million workers. But changing employment contracts, including outsourcing, informalisation and remote working, have led to diminishing membership numbers.
