Sleep Story: Mark Twain: The Man Who Preferred Cats to People

from The Whiskers Sanctuary: Sleep Stories for Cat Lovers · host The Whiskers Sanctuary

Tonight’s story is inspired by the true story of Mark Twain and his lifelong love of cats.At times, Twain’s household was home to as many as nineteen of them. They had names like Sour Mash, Beelzebub, Blatherskite, Satan, Pestilence, Bambino, Sackcloth and Ashes—because apparently ordinary cat names simply weren’t an option.Cats slept on his manuscripts. One kitten discovered that a billiard table pocket made an excellent place to sit during a game. And when Twain traveled and couldn’t bring his own cats with him, he sometimes borrowed or rented kittens so he wouldn’t have to spend the summer without feline company.Twain admired cats for their independence, honesty, and complete lack of concern for human importance. He once wrote that crossing a man with a cat would improve the man…but degrade the cat.The fire burns low.The house grows quiet. And somewhere nearby… there is always a cat. This is a slow, ambient bedtime story designed to help you unwind, quiet your mind, and gently fall asleep. Inspired by true events, it’s a warm and softly humorous nighttime story about writing, companionship, wonderfully ridiculous cat names, and one of America’s greatest writers discovering that sometimes the best company requires no conversation at all.So settle in…and spend a quiet evening with Mark Twain and his cats.—If you enjoy this episode, you can find more sleep stories at The Whiskers Sanctuary.Perfect for sleep, relaxation, true cat stories, literary history, cat lovers, or quiet nighttime listening.
