Bithia Mary Croker, better known as B. M. Croker, was an Irish-born novelist who lived from 1848 to 1920. She was a prolific writer, with over 40 novels and short story collections to her name. Croker was born in County Cork, Ireland and spent much of her life there before moving to London with her husband, a British army officer. Her experiences living in Ireland and travelling through India and other parts of the British Empire heavily influenced her writing. Quicksands is a gripping novel that explores the consequences of a single impulsive decision. The story revolves around the life of Violet Strange, a young woman from a respectable family who finds herself drawn to the bright lights and glamour of the city. Despite her family's objections, Violet moves to London and starts working as a private detective, determined to make a name for herself in a male-dominated profession. One day, while investigating a case, Violet meets a charming and wealthy man named Robert Cairn. Despite her initial misgivings, Violet finds herself falling for Robert and agrees to marry him.
