SMA Mini Series - Candisee McCormick - Don't Forget About Us

When she was first diagnosed, her parents were told that she likely wouldn't survive beyond the first few years of life. Now, at over 40 years old, Candisse is working hard to fight for her own rights to medical treatments. As we learn more and more about SMA and the many ways it impacts the nerve cells in the human body, we learn what a continuously changing world, those living with SMA are in. In so many more ways than we imagined. Because SMA targets nerve cells, without treatment, at any given time, abilities can be lost. In recent years, treatments have become more available to new babies born with SMA, but it is still an ongoing fight and journey of advocacy for those already living with SMA who are beyond the age of 20 (age depends on location). Candisse shares with us the many different steps she has had to take in order to gain a 1 year trial for medication to help slow the progression of her SMA as well as, a day in the life of someone living with SMA, in their 40's.
