SMART Goals, Wheelchair Training, & Why You Need a Goal That Scares You – Episode 137 (Solo)

from Blue Chip Athletic Club by Blaise Curtis · host Blaise Curtis

If you’re a pilot, active-duty military member, former athlete, or busy professional who keeps saying, “I just want to be healthier,” this episode will help you turn that vague intention into a real target you can chase. In this solo episode of the Blue Chip Athletic Club Podcast, I share a training and life update before breaking down one of the most useful tools we use in coaching: SMART goals. I’m six weeks out from completing a wheelchair half marathon and I’m learning firsthand how much skill, shoulder strength, patience, and mental grit it takes to move efficiently in a wheelchair—and gaining a whole new level of respect for people who navigate that reality every day. The half marathon is also a fundraiser for Coast Guard Mutual Assistance and its Special Needs Grant Program. It has become the ultimate side quest: turning an injury that could have derailed my summer into a goal that pushes me, gives me purpose, and supports military families. I also share updates on recovery and work. Then we get into SMART goals: Specific: Define exactly what you want to accomplish. Measurable: Make it clear whether you are progressing or have succeeded. Attainable: Build a goal you can realistically pursue. Relevant: Make sure it supports the life and performance you actually want. Time-bound: Set an end date or review point. The big addition I make to this framework: include a “level-up goal.” Pick something that feels a little intimidating. Sign up for the half marathon, sprint triathlon, powerlifting meet, Olympic lifting competition, or whatever challenge forces you to train with intention.
