Smokey City Market Begins in North Memphis
from Memphis News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Memphis and Shelby County are launching the Smokey City Market, a three-phase revitalization project in North Memphis’s Smokey City neighborhood, blending affordable housing with community businesses. Phase one kicks off with demolition of an old butcher shop, building 20 townhomes and affordable apartments alongside a temporary beer garden to foster community spirit. After years of planning since 2018, the Community Redevelopment Agency has secured developers AEQUO Fund and The Works, Inc., who’re investing their own money and seeking federal tax credits to complete the first phase by June 2028. Later phases will introduce generational co-living spaces and more commercial spots, all designed to create lasting value for local residents.
