What's going on everybody it's your boy divine we back with another twice born podcast. I got my boy with me twice Oh Jay, what up y'all? We are back with another episode man and really grateful it is Memorial Day weekend. You got your Memorial Day plans What are you doing?
I'm a Memorial Day Well as soon as we are done recording I actually have an appointment with a pit in my backyard Oh, I got some meat that is ready to go on the group. Hey The question is had you ever barbecued and played Call of Duty at the same time? That's the question people want to know most of the time that I play or most of the time that I barbecue I am playing the problem comes in is that it's easy to do in multiplayer, but it's hard to do in you know That meat will be burned brother. Yeah, exactly.
You can't just let it sit for a minute Real talk man. I mean you can't I mean the early stages of cooking your your fine, you know keep the fire down You just got to manage the temperature so we I'm going for the long haul today Anyway, I'm keeping the temperature low and kind of smoking my meat. So it's not gonna be like a I'm just trying to barbecue some ribs I'm gonna let it smoke so would you put I probably will only use one side of the grill for heat The other side is kind of like all right Before we hop into our episode give the novice barbecue person. This is their first Memorial Day They've never barbecue before they are now been given the tongs and the charcoal give them one piece of advice as they are preparing to do their first Grilling Memorial Day.
We can can I give two pieces of advice? Whatever you help the people my friend the first piece is if you're using a gas grill or a gas barbecue pit throw away Don't don't do it. Just just don't do it. It has zero flavor Jesus The point of barbecue is say it from the charcoal.
Yes from the wood from the coal It's it's something about that that makes it tasty if you just want grill lines That's that's yeah, you do that you can do that in your in your oven Yep, you can do that in your oven. Um, and if you boil your ribs before you cook them, you're absolutely a beginner slash novice Um, it's just a bad idea. It's never worked out good. It never tastes good people do it to try to make it cook faster Um, but if you're trying to make it cook faster, you're not looking for flavor.
Yeah, you're just trying to get a finished meal So don't do that. Okay, don't do it. It's a game of patience people a game of patience with the second the second Uh-huh hold on I know I gave two and one there, but let me give one more. Okay, if you need sauce you can't cook Now it's that saying that sauce is necessarily wrong, but if that's what you need correct you in trouble That means your daddy means your meat don't got no flavor.
Hey, uh, that's probably good. That gas grill Right probably most likely I am a person who I'm not against sauce However, sauce is a masquer for the real flavor. Yes So I challenge people when I make ribs when I make barbecue. I don't I don't put sauce on anything If you want sauce sure I got sauce But I'm not putting it on while I'm cooking and trying to get that into the flavor of the meat no no let the meat flavor It's so I mean use your seasonings to flavor the meat barbecue sauce is not a flavor that should be cooked into the meat if that makes sense.
It's a topping there you go It's a con it's like ketchup like like if you make it if you're making fries and you're catching the fries while they're frying that's not But then thoughts on these yeah, it don't make sense. Yeah, it's all the people an opportunity Don't just automatically barbecue sauce all your meat because some people don't really like sauce that is true personally I don't I don't my meat doesn't need sauce Come on man. Come on. I have no seeds my Yo, so this this is cool is not what the episode is about but it's very important that we have that out there man And just you know, I've got my own little two cents on there man Like look if you're first time doing this you're gonna make some mistakes and you got to be okay with it All right part of the game is learn a mistake But hear the man's wisdom all right you don't need sauce to make it pop Okay, that's the first thing I'll never be pure person you into that and then secondly if I were gonna add something into it just for me Uh my my personal endeavor is don't be too ambitious Okay, don't be too ambitious don't don't get out there trying to do pork shoulder and Try to do pork button you trying to do all this stuff and and listen if jay said you got to smoke it low and slow And you have no idea what that means hey stay away from that just keep it Get some chicken.
Yeah, you know, I'm saying get some chicken Get something simple like some hamburger like just get used to the smoke man when your smart point just start slow You got other barbecue points and jang and it be a bumpy and honest you should have been warming up for this day With that being said what is the subject for today? Social media man social media Social media media So This this subject of social media is a huge subject. It's a huge topic because I'll simply place this question. Do you know anyone who has zero social media zero?
No Limited yes zero no Limited yes good. Yeah, good. Yeah, I know Mothers and fathers in the church with social media accounts And I'm talking about I'm not just saying they got a social media Like they got a Facebook with no picture and all that kind of I'm talking about actively posting Dog right I'm talking about people who are in their 70s and 80s Just just posting just in there meaning they remember life before the internet However, they've decided to jump on the internet side of things and I so wish they would Okay, let me see that But I see what you're saying. I posed the question simply just to say that social media is everywhere everywhere Do you remember do you remember the first social media platform?
Like what's the first social media platform that you were? Remember AOL AOL social media. Well, I mean aim was a form of social media essentially you understand. Yeah, you had chat rooms Yeah chat rooms.
You had your own username You know that that was pretty much it well and then go to that extent I would have to go back even further than that. I don't know if I had anything further than that That's all I remember from me at dial up. I mean it kind of moved into place like black planet Yes, you know, I'm saying I think the first real one For I think most people were really slow to was facebook that was the first Gigantor on the block. Mmm.
I disagree there was one before it that it was bigger than facebook Hmm Yeah My space I'm sorry. Yo, my space is actually correct. My space is absolutely correct. I'm sorry.
I forgot my space. Okay. Now Now but remember before my space was black planet, but black planet was A place of people anyway black planet was the magic city of social media for black people back then But it was it was very small scale because it was literally for black folks I mean there don't get me wrong there were some other people on it, but it was a very small scale Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, social media, right?
Foreign's by then my space came out you had the opportunity to create your own page in music sell your music before copyright was the thing Oh, man. Well, before was the issue on the end? My space my space where everyone wanted to be on my space It was like all the kids are doing it. Let's let's get on it.
You know what I mean, bro We're talking about very early 2000s. And you know, it's funny about that. We really don't know I mean we know tom But tom was everybody's friend on my space and when I tell you that man got out and disappeared off the face of the earth He did so to say though. Yeah, and I make a statement about my space that I think set the tone for a lot of social media Okay, your top eight.
Oh, yeah, your friend group mattered And your top eight and you basically said who you care about by putting them in the top eight And if you had a fight with the person in the top eight you demoted them and here's what's key Here's the key because most of these young cats. They really don't know the real my space back then and this happened with beginning of Facebook Everything you did became a post so if you took somebody out of your five eight It would say Jason Jenkins removed x and x from their top eight and it would show up as a feed item It wasn't like how to go to your page to see it I can log on my space and the first thing it would say is it was called feed activity or something like that Yo, man, and you'd be like, I'm sorry. What or you're right, right? You didn't find out next week that I took you out you found out Immediately because or someone else will hit you up and be like, uh, you know, you just got removed, right?
Yep. Yep And you know it's funny like If you really had to be strategic because because you knew everything you did was being broadcasted It would even tell people whose page you went to yes If you would visit somebody's page it would be like Jason have visited exit somebody somebody's profile Until of course you could turn that off. Yeah, eventually you turned off because people didn't like that but but in the beginning you didn't have a choice I forgot about my space It's reminiscent of how I was talking about this was several episodes ago about people using threads and not understanding that We can see all the comments you're making to all these Instagram type model type females, you know what I mean? I like when you like a post that yep when you like how thirsty you are on threads guys.
We can see that it's it's evident You're literally you literally just said I wish I could spend the night with you in that tub like wait It's like did you did you mean for us to see that? Deacon are you sure you wanted to everyone to hear that? Let me tell you let me tell you this is so so so the so let me give a Back story for me. I started doing social media as a side business over the pandemic Yes, so one of the first things you have to do when you're dealing with people who if you get They hire me because never one either they are too busy to handle their own or they don't know what they're doing But they know they need it so one of the first things I have to do is tell them take take it off your phone Take it off your phone.
So for instance what happened with Shay with Shannon sharp when he went IG live All of those things seem impossible to other people they seem completely plausible to people who do social media So we say don't don't even give yourself the opportunity to post anything But the second thing we tell them is if you are going to keep it on there if you are going to keep it on there assume that every DM Every comment every like is being seen by everybody. You know I said if you if you operate that way you will you have you'll have okay experience But the minute you get too comfortable you are going to find yourself in trouble Yeah, and not everybody listened And it all had 100 percent the same the same experience at the end though if you listen to we're fine if you didn't it didn't go well Um, but that's powerful because because social media has a huge business aspect to it That I think that people don't talk about enough. Exactly. They ignore it It's it's a revenue stream for some It's a business strategy for some or for mini.
There's a lot of advertising dollars that goes into it Bro, um, there's there's all these different things because don't forget the media part of social media. Yes, right? Yes There's also a lot of politics. There's a lot of you know, there's a lot of things that come through social media, but Let's talk about What what's positive about social media?
Why did you why did you get personally? Why did you get onto social media? It's a huge tool It's a huge tool especially during the pandemic and clearly I was doing it before the pandemic But when I made when I made a business because pastors were trying to connect with their churches and they had no other way outside of in person They knew it existed. They just never thought of it as an actual thing.
I also spent a lot of time you and I do this too We spent a lot of time Watching streamers Right. Yes, right now kyce not who's probably the biggest streamer if it's not mr. Beast Mr. Beast is not really a streamer, but kyce not the biggest streamer He rented out a university a university campus and he's doing a thing called stream university right now for a whole semester where he invited At random streamers that he admitted as a dean to come there.
One of the classes is called pocket watching where Where essentially they show you how to look at somebody's stream and can tell how much money they're making, right? Really? So yeah, so they ran the numbers and the guy who was teaching the class name as agent He he ran the class and he just did his he just did his for the last month now. This is why this is why I think it's important This is the positive this young man is he might be 28 29.
I could be wrong I know it's below 30 He showed his revenue stream now what he does for streaming this is far different than I was me He just had he hides a cameraman who follows him around every day and he just does what they call iRL in real life He's just shopping talking cooking going over from jade out and every now and again those three video games His ad revenue. Okay. This is just from him running ads on a platform called twitch was close to $200,000 For the month monthly or annual for the monthly, okay YouTube sponsors at the end of the day He's making millions a year by doing this this is a young man, right? Young man who understands the business aspect he understands the taxes of it.
He understands and he's teaching the class This is a young man sub 30's never been to school never in the university and is teaching them how to manage a business, right? That's unheard of bro for someone to be making that much money who's not an athlete Um and who's teaching other people who are making not the same income but more income than their parents, right? A lot of these people who are came to the university are paid their parents loans off paid their houses off bought themselves their debt free their managing That is the positive side is you have you have kids who have opportunities to extend into a place that doesn't require them to get into college loan debt They don't have to go shake their behind on camera. They don't have to be an athlete They can just be people do what they love There's people who do crocheting making thousand dollars a month and all they do is crochet whatever the case may be all i'm saying is Social media made that possible social media made that possible now.
Here's the problem with that Okay, could you imagine at the age of 25 to 30 Having disposable income upwards of $500,000 a month. What kind of life you would be living right now Right. Could you imagine that could you imagine making that much money and having nobody could tell you anything? Who's gonna who's gonna tell you what to do unless it's somebody making more money than you doing what you do?
Well, I think money becomes an idol it does Aim because it becomes an idol. Absolutely and the question becomes you know clearly They talked about plans and stuff on how to how to manage your funds, but what happens once that's gone Who are you away from that camera? Who are you without subs? Who are you without brand deals?
Brand deals so like that's what they're doing. What extent what extent do you go to to continue? There you go Because I truly feel like there's a there's a morphing right you get on for one reason And it turns into something else man, but that's never the reason why you stay on Nope Nope, and that's the issue right? It's like like for me myself when I came to social media I came on social media for the sake of Connecting with people I went to high school with yeah I graduated with 130 people in my class 140 people 150 something like that, right?
Small class Very small class, but it was the largest class when we entered into that school in sixth grade Lightweights, but we went from six through 12th So imagine that a lot of people moved out when they got to high school to other schools but that being said I came to Connect with them. I end up connecting with them and family and church. Yeah All these people now I got over a thousand people Yep, and many of them I've never met in person Right now. I'm not streaming.
I'm not doing anything special. I don't I don't show you how I cook my barbecue I don't I do not give you a picture into my real life in my social media I don't you don't know you may see some pictures of me on vacation or something like that or I may post like a Raiders banner or a Dodgers banner you might know who my sports teams are the Lakers I might give you that inside of information But you will never know who I really am from my social media. It will not give a picture That being said For many people that is not the case Say more for many people they are not streaming their life, but they are posting their life. Yes, they're real true life I have probably one set of pictures of my daughter on social media And I I preface the post by saying I do not post her to social media because people are weird weird bro Now That being said I know people who post way too much Jesus And I'm saying way too much for me Because who am I to say what's too much now me personally I always had the rule and live by the rule and told my wife When when we're on vacation Let us not make any post until we return home.
Thank you You can post anything you want to when you're home, but I am not posting that we are in Jamaica So it's free range at my house because I'm overseas. That's OG wisdom don't You know what I mean wisdom I would never do that not to mention my mother-in-law still here I'm not about to get her jumped I mean like that doesn't make sense for real for real No, but but there are social media has become unsafe From that aspect. Yeah, and here's the crazy thing, right? Five years ago, 10 years ago.
I would have told you oh no no no You gotta be somebody popular for someone to be watching you. Nope Nope not today No more homes not today. Listen people and I'm about to go to a place that I don't really want to go People scam People are so shady So much to the extent that you have to protect yourself as an average person just Unknown to anybody just I'm out here You got you have to protect yourself like you're like you're completely famous Dude ain't that crazy? People will take stuff out of your yard out of your garage I honestly it makes me feel very uncomfortable when my garage is open and everybody who walks by is looking into my garage Yeah, the case in the door.
Yeah, no, so you're looking for weirdo Bro, uh, yo, and here's the thing like and this is this is the problem with social media People will let me let me back up Social media is completely necessary the same way guns are necessary No, no, try it back on try it back on And I know I'm being controversial with this but guns are necessary because people make guns necessary Social media is necessary because people make social media necessary LinkedIn is now the new way to get jobs. I just I mean Indeed is a new way to get jobs right LinkedIn is a social media platform Because you guys didn't know LinkedIn as much as about your resume and all that stuff It is literally a social media platform if you are if you are a content creator Let me tell if you are a creative but you have an independent business and you're not on social media You're robbing yourself a clientele Not not because you made social media important, but because people live there and that's what your clientele is they make social media That's what makes it necessary if nobody has social media you wouldn't need it correct if nobody had guns you wouldn't need them But that's that's you're talking about as a business owner as a business owner Yeah, well, not as a business owner. I mean, but even that term moves outside of that this young lady that I just found her name is on YouTube and you're your mom Ashley. I don't know why it is.
She's a young Korean girl I mean 30 something 31 living in in New York and she started her entire she built her social media platform on YouTube as a youtuber and Her life dream was to open up her own matcha business She has to use social media because she doesn't have a brick and mortar shop She does pop-ups in the pop-ups or no Instagram and you to be so like she's a business owner But she's really a content creator that started a business but the social media is necessary on both We have two people in our church. They are content creators their life is built off of them being able to book gigs Do music yet in the other they have to post on TikTok It is a requirement for them if they don't post on TikTok not only is it making lose revenue, but it loses gigs, right? Ray's getting to release her album We have to the part of the reason why it's been delayed is because we have become a social media strategy to make sure that she's in front of people People make it necessary because people have exalted social media. So now you have to meet them where they are even for church I tell every church.
Yes, you don't live stream. Absolutely. You don't need a live stream live stream is a that's one of those places you can you know You can live or not live but social media absolutely necessity You have no other choice even if you don't get any engagement in your eyes You still need to be posting because that's where the people are and so like it used to be about business It used to be about you know, it's it's good for creatives at this point It's an necessity for anybody who wants to expand their reach and that's what makes it dangerous That's what makes it dangerous. It makes it dangerous because Because I have to have it in a sense of if I'm gonna progress I need this Because of that now everything that comes along with it the things that I don't intend to have Things I don't intend to engage in now.
I got to engage in it So for instance, I'm posting about my business. It's what I gotta do. I gotta post about my business I gotta put that stuff out or raise your put out a song. I gotta promote this song This is gonna be the single we're gonna promote it.
I'm just gonna talk about you gotta get it Somebody hop into your hop into your comments. This song sucks. Right. Okay.
Okay. Yeah, you're not gonna get a perfect I get it cool. This song sucks. Yeah, but now you react now you react is what determines a lot exactly Yes, and I have to read that and it lives there.
It lives like every time I go to that post now There's one of those comments or every time I go live in that was what me when I go live sometimes for bible study Someone's gonna hop in there start talking crazy and you that's the part that you did not sign up for but if you're gonna be here It's kind of it's kind of a story. It is it is you have you have opened the doors to everyone You know how you know how an actual brick and mortar business has a sign that says we we No shoes. No shirt. No service.
Yes. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. That's what it says, right? Media not on social media not on social media.
Yes, you can give somebody the business on social media But what ends up happening? Your business if that's how you if that's how you act. I talked about see you the other day or the other episode Um, which that has changed a lot right in the beginning It used to be a lot of arguing back and forth and and you know, uh, see it would go in on somebody, you know, um, uh, Devlin you go in on somebody. Um, now not so much He doesn't really go in on people too much anymore, but I think it's because he understands that trolls are trolls and you can do that Trolls are gonna troll.
They're just gonna troll so don't even waste your energy and the crazy part about it Is I just introduced a word to this whole podcast that we had not talked about before but trolling. It's a real thing It's a real thing. Yo and the crazy thing is that the true definition of a troll is not someone who actually cares Why they are saying what they're saying their whole purpose is to get a reaction out of you and it took you off That's what trolling is that's all it is man. And here's and so this goes kind of back into the other part of it Right some people might consider this a a plus.
I do not when When before social media, it was very easy to identify who had courage and who didn't You can find a sucker in the street just by looking at his actions, right? Yes, social media has given the guys For cowards to appear strong So instead the things they type say and do is what they can do under the guise of a name When in real life, they would never do it. I just saw a clip Where this guy was talking crazy In these forums talking about he was gonna kill the the police captain of the city He was in a completely different state. He was from that city.
He had moved for different state He didn't like to do he didn't like the policies to do was talking about He also believed that there was some kind of weird bible verse he was going off of that was like proving his point that the police captain was going to hell Something really weird. He's talking crazy, right? Yeah, he didn't know that them jokers called the police department in his state. They picked him up And flew him back home Guess who the first person was to meet him when he got off the plane The police captain Who he was who was to be a threat and the guy's coming down the escalator from coming off the gate and he goes, hey My name is captain such and such and so i'm the police captain you're trying to kill and hands the dude with the gun and goes please by all means Dude was a coward dude was a coward.
I say that I saw that and I was like a part of me wishes Every person every troll or anybody who talks crazy on the internet could be addressed that way But then I thought about it. I thought about it Some of that stuff does get handled that way Some of these kids are talking crazy on the internet and then going to school And out of really unnecessary tobacco what they said are doing the things they typed knowing that that's not who they really are Kids going to jail for murder Because they said they were gonna kill somebody and now they get pressed for it now they got to do it I saw another video where a young girl was talking crazy while she's talking crazy They're going back and forth Twitter the other girl she's talking crazy to is driving to her house doesn't knock on the door Kicks the door in while the while the girl's talking crazy drags her by the hair outside to the front lawn and beats her down right there And I thought to myself. I was like man. What a sad world we live in social media.
I got possible I'm gonna come back to that. I don't want to talk about that yet, but I'm gonna come back to that part for sure Yeah, um because you mentioned the kids what we'll come back to that um Man, you said so much you said so much and and you know I think I think from a business aspect. Yes, you do yourself a huge disservice by not having social media You have to you've got to gotta do it right and when I say business. I'm talking about the person who has an album coming out Yeah, I'm talking about the person who has you know, um A small business.
Yeah, I'm talking about the the ministry. I'm talking about the churches. I'm talking about the big businesses I'm talking about your tent shop. I'm talking about like all of these different businesses.
Yeah, right Um It's it's it's mandatory But on a personal level, it's not mandatory. It's choice. Absolutely Absolutely. I always say this My life before social media was better.
Absolutely Absolutely I almost I'll say like this. I'm on the ledge. I'm on the cliff two to three times a week. I'm ready to just Close them all.
Where's somebody can't at all joy. I'm out I'm ready to close them all Because there's something that I see that's just like oh my gosh. It's just so exhausting But see okay, this people do stuff. I don't need to see but bro people do that when they when this this is what causes people to do social media breaks It's them disconnected.
Yeah, you know what I'm saying? When in reality is like if you needed a break the first time Do you really still need it? You know what I'm saying? Like if you had to walk away.
Do you have to come back? Like don't break break off. Yeah, like cut it out Be done with it. Please cut it out.
Yeah, because if you don't see any worth in it from a personal standpoint If you don't see any worth in it just give it up Because remember you had a life before it You were just fine You were just like if you were my age you had a life before it We always like to go outside hop on your bike and ride bro I'm so glad you said that we don't like to drive it to hop in your car and just and just drive yeah Or go hang out with people. We don't even Granite we are we are on the other side of a pandemic. Yes, there was a time frame where we could not leave And we all had cabin fever and we all needed, you know, uh zoom wasn't zoom before oh no pandemic No, no, no right teams wasn't teams before the pandemic absolutely not Not even close but but now we live off of those things that work now if you work remote You don't know what what life without teams is bro. They just told us at our job Oh, thank you for this but that's what's at our job.
We're not even allowed to text message. We have to use teams Bro, that's how ingratiated it is like you can't Yeah, like it is the standard because they need record they need record of everything. Yep, which was not a thing before It was not a thing. It was not a thing and so so it's kind of like fasting So like when we're gonna ready to do a fast next month our next week is the next week social media fast or just a fast as a church We're doing fast.
It's a church white fast in consecration So for that week leading up to the epinegaas We're fasting every day and praying every night Undoubtedly at the top of the year we do a 21 day fast It is undoubtedly people walk away from the fast whether it be a week or three weeks they go I feel so much better. I'm sleeping better. I think more clearly. I've never felt more connected This is the stuff on here every single year.
I've never felt more connected to god And it really has to deal with cutting away tv cutting away certain foods Just putting your body. Yeah, the other now my question to them is always the same if you feel like this now Why do you go back? What like why it's like it's like this Let's just say that there is a fruit It's a poisonous fruit when it's the best tasting fruit you could ever have I like this already. All right.
Let's go. I'm feeling it's got some bitter parts to it Yeah, but it's the best tasting fruit you could ever have But you know that it's slowly killing you But you can't get over the fact that it just tastes so good so good It's not your lips And so you get rid of it and you stop eating it and you feel so much better because you feel like you're recovering I'm almost back to who I used to be my mind talk jay but then You get a whiff of that fruit and you're like No, man. I gotta get the fruit. Oh, oh, okay.
Hold on scratch all of that. Okay. So, you know, I used to be vegan He did used to be vegan I was vegan for probably about four or four and a half years, right? Talk about it.
I think I know you're about to go with this I have a favorite burger My favorite burger is the double western bacon cheeseburger from harl's doing your or a hardy's talk about it The number four. Yeah, yeah, chris cut fries. Talk about it. Oh, okay.
Reach. Reach man again So I go vegan after four years of being vegan There was something that called me back I drove by a carl's junior and I smelled A double western. Yeah. Yeah, and that thing came crawling to you, doc And I said Nays the day And I believe that that's what is happening now mind you during the time that I was vegan I lost Bad weight you did you did I was getting back to you know, I was still probably about 15 pounds over high school away But I was getting I was getting down there man So I'm starting to feel like hey, man You know what I mean?
Like this is this is a great feeling and it's a discipline for me to do that And the discipline and the discipline and the discipline and the discipline and the discipline and the discipline and then I smell Thought it took a double western and I'm like Carls junior song comes and we got him y'all We got and the crazy part is as I'm not built like I was in high school Oh The difference was was when I was in high school. I had this thing called metabolism Oh I could eat whatever I want whenever I want it and it would be burned because I was so active But now but now I'm an adult and I'm not as active and so the things that I eat will sit and stay on me Geez the ways Preach and so when I came back to that carl's junior Give him the wisdom I blew up like a boy band from Korea I was about to kpop Literally That was about a kpop. I was huge And that's huge and I think that is That's social media going back to that meat at the time that I went back to the meat and eating and the habits that I had It really was starting to kill me. Yo, I went instantly into pre diabetic and all that kind of stuff You know what I mean?
Like I was doing too much and I feel like if you have to fast from something You should probably just let it go You got to figure out whether the taste is worth the effect Because it's killing you And here's how I feel about social media is the taste where's the worth the effect? Taste and see that the Lord is good, right? Tasting is seeing and once you see it's hard to come back Now that works on a great on a great spiritual level with God, but it's the same principle for you as a human being That same taste That adam and eve had Cost them everything Yes, because once the scripture says now that they've tasted their eyes have been opened Yes, right and the idea is that they're naked and now they're naked So you've been introduced to something that you did not know was going to ruin you the way it is And so now you are living with what I consider now a complex that was never intended for you, right? Now am I telling you that you're not allowed to know what's going on in the world?
Absolutely not you absolutely can can know what's going on in the world and they have ways for you to do that that does not require social media Yes, absolutely. So what you can do that? Absolutely mainly you can just talk to a friend Sometimes a simple conversation will give you a better context than what you're seeing on the news And I think what's happened and you just you just hit the nail on the head Our kid Our kids are growing up Our kids are growing up two things happen in the same day Okay, two things happen in the same day all yesterday My daughter has been face-timing which in a sense is not is not social media, but it has very very familiar social media tones Yeah, it has lead-ups. It has lead-ups.
It's uh, it's like a It's like a starter. Yes, yes. Yes. Yes.
You're basically being introduced to it So what happened was um, my daughter is playing doing face-time with her friends And um one of the she has like a group of four friends. This is this later in the night They ask a question. Hey, did you sleep with such and such? Okay, now my daughter is naive.
She didn't even know what that meant. She thought in her head It meant did I have a sleepover with this kid from school and she's like, no I heard that rekom saw my say rekom would you have a conversation with your daughter about About something that was introduced. What would happen and rekos and tells her like hey, this is what that means Beautiful moment. Well, you know, I hate that had to come in that way, but it was great because we were able to explain it to her From a safe space a way that we can do it.
Yeah, but that's my daughter's not on social media My daughter was on social media. She would have a complete understanding of what that meant But we wouldn't have been the ones to introduce or to that subject bro social media would have done that Okay. All right. Let's go there because that's talking it's now.
Uh-huh. That's talking it's because What we're talking about is exposure. Yes tasting and saying social media takes away innocence From these children and gives them adult things to talk about when they're five when they're seven when they're nine when they're 11 Things that they really don't need to be exposed to not now Not at all because even close because here's the thing Nope And and that early exposure see and here's the thing social media forces you to have the conversations early because if you don't they will Exactly somebody somebody in my daughter's friend group has clearly been having those conversations and talking that way They're all in the same place overhearing it or at least overhearing it and so now because of that We have to have the conversation a couple of years earlier than what we were intending Does that make sense and social media does that we're introduced as our kids to so much that eventually you're gonna have a conversation about that We'll have a conversation about you know politics war death all of that stuff But in our timing as parents we know when the best time for that is social media has zero context to age group Yes, provide your children of their innocence Absolutely And what I say innocence, I mean just just them just being kids and not having to worry about worldly stuff Absolutely because here's the key now Those same friends are gonna are gonna make comments like that again, but now my daughter's gonna have a better context of what they're saying That doesn't make it show better Right, you know, I'm saying now she's been exposed to that all the way my son. So so This is the other part my son is another beautiful moment We went to the pool officially opened up over in our housing complex Yesterday first my daughter wants to do swimming.
All right, let's go my son did not want to play basketball at the basketball court right next to it So I'm like all right. Well, you can play basketball. She'll go swimming. I'll be right there for both of y'all She's done swimming and he's like hey my friend is he said it's he says it's too out of the basketball court We're gonna walk down to the playground the playground was between the pool and the house about a block And um, I said he says can I go And at first I was gonna say no isn't I thought about it Jay.
I was like my man Was having a conversation with a kid at a playground. Yeah, they're playing At a basketball court. They play a ball. They make plans to go to another park and not once was he thinking about let's go play fortnight Let's go get a deal.
He was like I want to be outside. I want to play I said bet go he goes now. We're going home I'm passing by the park wherever his friend was he was playing with is gone now. There's a whole nother group of friends that are over there They all chopping it up having some kind of argument with his other classmates on the playground and I thought to myself I said man my son is 10 get ready to turn he get ready to turn 11 this year That's the first time in his life that he independently was going outside Didn't ask me to bring an iPad or to be around a tv like he's living like that's what we were doing Jay We were doing and here's where so I told right I said hey, you know someone I'm playing today And she brought something up out to me today.
She was like man We really we really got to figure out how we're gonna be able to track him Because I realized after she said that he went to the playground and he was like that's like a block away if he would have been taken from the playground I have no way of tracking him Right that wasn't a thought for our parents that wasn't a thought for our parents our parents let us go outside And we had to be about to realize they weren't thinking about that But it becomes a possibility now because like you said earlier Even if you're not important people are scheming people are scheming bro and they do it through social media and they do it through roblox That's a social media platform now that just happened to have games on it And now I have to think to myself I can't even let my son play an innocence because social media has made outside dangerous not just inside That makes outside dangerous bro. I guess wild to me Bro humanity dude, I want to say I want to say I hate it so much man because you know in the same vein of of You know you're not having to be a big name person for someone to want to scam and steal and you know all that stuff At the same time, I feel like we are also overfed Stories of kidnappings and things like that Through social media so that we can live in a certain level of fear. Yeah Now I will say this I think that if if if if uh if he's by himself I'm concerned If he's with a group of kids And so long that I know that this and have I've met these kids And this is this is how I look at things right the neighborhood that I grew up in there were there were boys in the neighborhood And we played together and we would rock out together. Yeah, but we will also not only will we play outside We would also play inside at each other's houses our parents knew each other and all of that stuff But we would go and we would disappear for hours.
We would ride our bikes dang near to la You know, um just riding on trails and through the aqueduct like just just doing you know doing a little boy stuff You know riding around I don't think that my father was in any bit of fear when we were doing that But I do know that my father had a certain amount of fear when we were in her city roaming around You know what I mean? Yeah playing Versus hanging out with two different things because in our generation right we're talking about you know By the time we were hanging out we're talking about you know 15 13 93 95 This is this is height of gangs and all that kind of stuff Yep hanging out to go hang out in the mall my dad might have a certain level of worry But if we're playing in our own neighborhood, he's not worried at all But if I'm in Carson, he's worried because now that being neighborhood I'm playing in bro and think about this That is just based upon external just life Correct my kids I had to disable chat because they were oblivious to the fact that on the other end of those screens not everybody's a kid Correct So when Mike sense said he went to go play basketball. I said who's gonna be there? He goes my friend I said who's this friend?
Friend from school. Okay. Well, how you know, he had the basketball court. He told me where we were playing for night together Okay Together Right, that's why I said oh I'll go with you That's why I was there with my court But but I say that to say like that's where it's crazy now before if I want to go play call them on the phone They didn't pick up right my back to the front door can they come out and play that's how they went Yeah, these kids make their own plans in a chat group You see I'm saying and and completely go out and do crazy stuff And so like and I'm not putting them on my own list of the kids I'm saying this is what social media has introduced is a way to Communicate in a falsehood that takes not only the innocence out of playing But now adds a whole lot of air Houston is the human trafficking capital of the United States Our Gulf has more human trafficking that comes through it than any other city in the country and I think to myself, right?
Well, good lord If I were gonna go try and get some kids now, this is what I will say now this was good But you just said the neighbor part, right? This is where this is where social media cannot beat social media cannot defeat community It cannot correct correct. I had maybe about six months ago There's a guy we have a new husband he is a guy who was coming by and apparently he was like, you know trying to sell solar panels That was his thing. Yeah, I don't know what it was.
I don't know what it was about this But apparently he spoke to one of the parents. Okay. Yeah, the parent hops into the Facebook group Shout out to all the old people who use Facebook groups, right? For our community maybe 2000 people all across cross-free Post the man's face license plate number to the truck and is like, hey, if you see this dude watch out He comes to my front door and he goes hey, you're my last house He goes because I just visited the last house and they have already posted my face in this in this chat group He goes, I'm not I'm not a threat at all, but I can already tell I'm not welcome here So I'm out the community.
I don't even know what that he was on He didn't seem unsafe to me, but the community collectively was like all the circles one mom to go shut it down whole community was in themselves safe Because of that. I don't care what you're talking about social media. If you have strong community bro You'll never be able to break that you'll never be able to break that you have a good set of aunties and uncles and I'm using that term loosely That can that can that can help reinforce and teach it'll net like I'm telling you bro Community even from bible days was the answer family community That was always the answer to danger of any sort of any kind if you had problems that were internal You could still handle them inside the community. That's where the church is Social media is the same way in the same way that my kids would be able to you know You ever go to your grandma's house and be able to get away with murder Absolutely.
Yeah, yeah, because because because grandparents can't watch you the way your own parents can yeah The problem with social media is is that uh your aunt's and uncle's can right exactly so like if I see oh you think I'll my niece is a nephew I was on yes, but I'm saying one of them just recently posted them. I was like, huh? No, she's like now wait a minute now Right, I wonder if you're not has seen this you see what I'm saying you see what I'm saying So social media has its own walk watch dogs the way our community does right if I see listen We got a kid in our church just graduated high school love this dude to death man And he ain't ever give me no problems, but the minute he post some controversial Oh, I'm on like I said, I'm I'm shutting that down bro. Yeah, I mean I guess for me.
I wonder if the juice is worth the squeeze I'm apart. You know what I mean? Yeah, because I am you know me. I am more of a fan of Walking through life with you.
Yep That that real community reach out and touch. I'm more into that than I am a facade online um where Again, I'm still in this group of a million people, but nobody really really knows me. Yeah We don't even know what I showed them. We have to get this camera We have yo we have we're gonna set up a go for me for an office space.
No no for the camera This is gonna be don't this is gold because okay. Do you consider do you consider sound cloud social media? I think there's aspects of many things that have pure intentions That have a social media aspect to them now. Okay.
We're not originated that way. I see what you're saying You know what I'm saying? I'm rocking with you. I'm going with you.
So I feel like I feel like the purpose of sound cloud was not social media, but it was the purpose of spreading, you know your music getting your music out there. Yeah, yeah, um however Uh, you know, obviously there is the aspect of placing comments and all of that stuff Which Okay, give me define what social media is in your opinion. Not like an official definition, but like how would you define social media? This is fantastic.
I'm telling you we're giving the camera. That's it. I'm getting the camera. That's it This is too good.
I'm losing it um the definition of social media, okay, so first and foremost I would say There is the aspect of sharing media Okay. Now that that's a good start for sure Sharing media, but then the aspect of being able to give a an opinion by way of comment By way of you know splicing a video and putting yourself next to it and having something to say all of that extra stuff that comes along with it is What makes it social media, right? Um, I think a comment section isn't necessarily social media However, many social media sites started from things like comment sections like way back in the day I used to be very um, I used to spend a lot of time on all hip hop calm Really and Yeah, it's in the rumor in the rumor section on all hip hop calm And uh, what happened was was the rumor section used to be popping We would be in there and we would be talking and you know saying a whole bunch of stuff and and honestly it was just about rumors Right, it was about rumors in the all hip hop or in the hip hop Um, you know genre essentially So we would comment on the rumors and it became less about rumors but more about the community of it, right? So then one day what happened was some uh, some Racist site came in and took over all hip hop.com And they posted all of this like, you know, you know, swastikas and kkk and wait what?
Forget inwards and all the stuff they changed the whole page a whole format of the other website So they took down the site for like three days to recover everything in the midst of that The group that used to hang out in the rumor section. We created our own social media site. I can't remember what it was called, but we became what's known as the rumor exiles It's about maybe about Five to ten women and probably about 30 guys The rumor exiles we were just everyday people who were from different places But we were always meeting up commenting on each other's posts and all that stuff So we made our own little social media stuff. We actually have a facebook group Um, the group of these people called the rumor exiles, uh, and we were called the exiles because When they shut down the site we had nowhere to meet up I like this But one of them was like a like a web designer like lightweight light wake it So he was able to create a space for us and then we all went in there and we would you know talk and just you know Talk our stuff just messing around and saying what's up and you know, just talking about stuff.
Um That community to this day. I still keep up with a lot of those people Um You know, I've seen one of them get married and have kids and and actually his wife passed away. Jesus Um, I've seen a couple of them get married Uh, yeah, actually get married have kids and their kids are playing soccer and doing all this stuff now and Uh, you know a lot of and now this goes back to like 2001 2002 But it's all social right. I only know of them what they've shown me.
I don't know of them Okay, here's a here's a prime example. You remember uh, you remember I told you about the dude from um from uh, New Zealand who asked about the park? Oh, yeah He's a rumor exile Wow, his name is Alexey murs and he lives in New Zealand, but he I met him in the rumors. Um chat when we used to talk in uh, what's that?
Um, that's why Yeah, yep Okay, so in that in so would that be would that be a it's clearly a good thing so I don't want to You mean it's a positive it's a way to connect with people who you would never connect with but we had a commonality For the rumor section Right our intentions nothing that we said in the rumor section like we would bag on each other, but it wasn't like to be hurtful Yeah, you know what I mean? It was just it was just bagging right? Yeah, yeah playing the dozens man I think today The intent or the not even the intent but the use of social media is way different than it was way back then uh, agreed and so now it is used to Show you my life But you've got to be a certain individual to think your life is that important to everyone else that I'm going to spend my life watching your life Got just enamored by all of your greatness Bro, do you really think? Do you really think that I'm so?
Tapped in and tuned into you that I'm going to spend my life watching you live yours Hey, dog. I'm too grown for that You've got to be kidding me. This is why I get annoyed when people go live in church Oh my god, that please don't give me a step. What are you doing?
You're going live in church That means you have taken yourself out of the experience so that you can give a window for someone else to see the experience But they're not there so they don't feel what you feel bro Bro ain't nobody got saved through somebody's live in church And my thing is and I'm talking about the unprofessional live I mean the individual who decided to show the choir singing versus the actual church having a live stream And I'm saying it's like you're like you're like like the church and don't have their own way of showing that off man You we're good you are about it unofficial as can be you may got the press pass Bro, I just did I just did two weddings both weddings Did I think have you ever heard of this and unplug? Yes, I love it. I love it. I love it But like I didn't even think about that like I want you to be someone that's experienced put your cell phone down Now watch what crazy is it'll be different if they were just recording it for their own archive people aren't even recording them anymore They're just going live.
They're going live and here's the thing I didn't invite them Gives you the right to invite them. Why you bring them here? Hey, dog. That's the that's the honest the guy true If I didn't invite them why you might not get an envelope They had a link to a live stream fam.
What are we doing? Seat at the table fam and I invite them who gave you the right to weirdo. What are you doing? Yeah, dog I ain't gonna say that about church because God got it go be like, hey man.
What you doing inviting people? You bet I am I'd be like that you don't have the access to get get out of here get out of here But but those are the types of things that to me I and I think social media makes this happen completely people go to concerts and instead of watching the concert and experiencing the concert for themselves They're showing the concert For other people to tap in for two seconds and then decide I can't see nothing anyway because your seats are way that I mean those bleed all I see is lights and I know that there's somebody on stage I can't see who the person is you got to give me a video of the video in order for me to see who's actually performing because I have no clue And you know what's sad this was sad bro. It's not like it's happening with one or two or three people Generally the whole crowd the whole like it's only the whole timeline is just filled with whatever event was happening that day Hey, let me ask you a question because my wife does it and it frustates a life out of me I have never seen her go back and watch any of those videos. No No, nobody does The purpose was the purpose was almost it's almost selfish.
I wanted you to know I'm here boom. I want you to know I'm here boom Yeah, I went to I went to I'm a part of it. Look at this experience here's not a soul That is a status thing Bro and it's unnecessary bro. Don't nobody need to know it's borderline a mental issue Yeah, it is showing broken.
It's like like you need you need this like this is the part you need this This is for validation. This is where you need it And in my eyes You just spent all this money to try to validate something But you missed the whole experience because you saw it through the eyes of a screen versus the eyes that you were given Let me make this statement almost as I'm not a lot But absolutely does the cameraman ever really experience it? No That's why you have to pay them because they have a cameraman never really fully gets the experience I I'm gonna get a moushut but yes absolutely because you're getting paid as the cameraman. Yep not too engaged.
Yep Your job is to do your job and be the cameraman And we have everyone paid to become now the cameraman what sense does that make and that's the thing we pay the cameraman so that you can enjoy the experience Words from the counter church has contracted cameraman who we absolutely love I mean with everything in us But we contract them so that everybody else can just be there Correct if you need to go back and watch it the cameraman made sure that they provided a way for you to do that I don't really need you to come in and do that. I've already I've already hired someone to do that and I'll be honest They're gonna do it way better than you ever could So because they're professionals so let them do your their job and you do what you paid money to do be entertained Because I promise you this now we're not saying that for worship and counter church you're you know You're not there to be entertained. Yeah, you better be entertained from a church aspect. You're there to participate Focus get your participation on the experience there you go encounter you can't encounter while you're nope camera manning nope Shokan you're trying to to show everybody what's happening and doing a bad job at it That's my thing.
It's like it'd be different if like me you're so dope at it I understand why you're doing it and you are not good at the camera you're camera shaky you're holding it wrong Somebody are filming on iPads. Please let me get me started on this somebody are using iPads to film these experiences put the iPad down You're holding a giant white screen TV blocking somebody's view because you don't know how to film Please don't give me this this was supposed to be just created because what you want is an archive of I was there Yes, that's all you want. You know what you can keep it big though. You can keep it and guess what and guess what we now lack memory Can't can't even remember not experiencing you don't even remember what happened because you weren't really there out of there Now we're there, but you weren't there for experience or for an encounter you were there for a For an encounter Can't turn it up.
What do you think about this? What if on your honeymoon night the night that you have spent all this time money It's about to be intimate with your spouse and you say hold on Let me go live Yeah, yeah Wait, did you want to Everybody to know what we get ready to do or did you want to do what we get ready to do and to be honest with you You lose moments of intimacy when you try to invite the outside in Social media Stills from the intimacy of life because you keep inviting people's commentary eyeballs thought process into things that were meant to be sacred There are parts some people got mad because we didn't we didn't we didn't uh, we didn't do certain things when they were younger I wasn't gonna live stream my kids first grade or kindergarten celebration But we wanted to be there, but you're not I don't know what else to tell you Mike I get it the bars that you just spit Those are bars bro. The robbing of intimacy Bro, that is Exactly what is happening, but the the crazy part about it is is that it's not some some crazy force that's asking you to rob your Rob this note you are robbing yourself by yourself dog. Ain't nobody else even asking you to do it You just you don't even three people interested in what you're driving anyway No, not even close not even close big dog like they just like hey That's like you could you tell them the story and they would be more interested in hearing you retell the story than then watching it Because then you tell a story of experience.
Yeah, you go. There you go They would be locked in of actually being there locked in and I can tell you what happened bro They would be so locked in and you know so funny man Those are the best time when you said around talking about memories that people weren't there for that's part of what made photo albums So incredibly important in houses and I don't know how many more but you could not go to a black person's house and not have an album pulled out From some 15 20 years ago. I got pictures right now on my wall of my parents and my in-laws at their wedding day There is no video. There is no live stream.
There is no youtube of it. They have to explain a moment to me Right. You said it makes sense. So now I have to sit down and go to what was happening in this picture I'm more interested in hearing that than watching it.
Does that make sense? I don't want to see the video I don't care if you have video tell me what you were feeling in this picture And I think I think we've lost it bro I think social media robs you of that because it leads people to their own explanation And that's and that's where we're getting trouble is that people now begin to form their own opinion about ultimately what's happening in a moment Yes, absolutely Absolutely, bro. So there was a part that you said that I want to bring up real quick You talked about the fact that people because you opened the door and you you now take the intimacy out of the situation and scenario You now invite people to comment. Yeah And so now when you get trolled you get hurt You but if you had not done what you did And just lived through the moment versus trying to capture the moment You wouldn't have to deal with that none of that and it would have been something between you and that y'all made a memory Correct.
It was y'all Correct. That's why we don't have no good storytellers no more none because the story is always viewed versus being talked about There it is. It's not being it's not being shared, which is Which is how which is how never mind let me not get into that but but again, yes Again, that and that's the thing here's the thing like is social media bad? No Can we trust people with it?
No No, it's just not it's the most overused Wrongly used that's yeah, that's that's it right there Medium that there is There's people that don't even know what social media is that are on it They don't understand they don't understand the point of it Bro, you know post but they'll say stuff and it's just like I get it. Okay beyond that let's I want to I want to move on to something that you know, we talk about the kids for a quick second, but I want to talk about the the mental aspects and the mental issues that social media feeds to the children though Because I think that that's one of the parts, you know, we just got through talking about, you know mental health I think that children are at a higher level of Mental health issues than ever before and a lot of that has to do with social media because social media is about status It's about likes follows hearts comments interactions It's about all of these things, but there's also people at the top looking down at people at the bottom And you are nothing until you get to this many likes Your whole identity gets this And so the status of it These children are being given a social status while they're still children And that's not something a child should wrestle with that's why a lot of children are, you know, doing things I don't even know can we can we say like we have to say unalive now like to be this is stupid, but you know, these children are you know, suicide rates are high Yeah, these children are gathering their self-worth from social media social media and there's bullying on social media Yes, these kids are being talked to all kind of crazy and they don't know how to handle that because they haven't been One of the biggest shocks to me when we first had Caleb was you're not supposed to give your your child water You don't you don't give the baby water. It has to be formula. I don't think it's myself before we got water in it But their bodies are not made to digest pure water They need water when they're old enough that water will become a a valuable asset given too soon It'll kill them one way or another.
We have to accept the fact that social media is the future for our children The internet is yours and as much as we love how we grew up that is not the norm for them anymore But them getting it too soon We'll kill them And what is and what is happening for our kids is They are being force fed They're being force fed and let me tell you where it's starting It starts because the parents are so busy that the one way to keep your kids from being an annoyance to you Is to give them an iPad put in front of a tv and it starts early the digital experience starts so early for them That got blessed mr. Rachel and tab time and all that stuff. I love that I love the fact that our kids can learn I wish it was all as healthy as a sesame street and mr. Rachel all that stuff That's great.
But the motivation behind it is not hey, let me give them an hour of this and let me go over here It's no I need to go do this. I need to go do my life and I need you to stay right here So sit here and watch that while I go do this and so I'm too busy to parent and that is where it begins Social media electronics tv is babysitting our children It's moved from entertaining our children to babysitting our children to now raising our children And understand people that is a huge difference. Yeah entertainment babysitting Imagine giving the responsibility of your child to Some electronic Bro, it is We we don't just let anybody watch our children. We would rather stay home than just hire somebody We don't use and there's no shade to businesses that have this we don't hire We don't go to some random babysitting webs.
We don't do that if you don't know our children you can't be around that If that's the case in real life, why would I let anybody on social media? Speak it to my life my wife's my child's life and it begins to impart things that's impressionable times for them Exactly. Um, so all that being said Social media is one of those things where again, it's a part. It's a part of my life.
It is what it is But I also understand there's no possible way in the world. I could ever allow my children To experience what I know is there I can't I can't I can't let that happen. So what is the age From your from your ass and maybe you don't know the answer to this But I know you're considering right you got it You got to be considering because you know these ages are coming at what point do you allow or expose your children to it? They have to determine that for me They have to determine to me where their maturity level is right my son walked around here.
He's going What I'm trying to say is on maturity level gotta be you have to show me the fruit that you can handle that So my son was like, I'm trying 16. I'm gonna drive. I said hopefully You can literally go get a license Because you can legally drive does not mean you get a license So like we're gonna start with baby steps and small stuff like can you handle that and can you handle that consistently and can you do that now You're trying to please us but because it's who you are this is who you are that so there's a proving ground essentially Absolutely and when you get that like that's about cell phones You're not getting a cell phone until you can prove to us So why am I gonna give you a cell phone and I can't trust you to turn off the bathroom light listen I I From a cell phone perspective all three of my kids I caught all three of them watching porn Or on the same age roughly roughly all around the same age and These these children they think that they can hide See I'm not I'm not to the age where I don't know technology, right That's the key. I think that they think that I'm a grandparent We invented this stuff here before the internet, but I was not here before the internet was an idea Bro, we I was here before the internet became a mass thing.
We made the internet bro. Like I think they're missing that there's not Our lives are built on what they think they can hide from us Yeah, and so exactly and so my point in bringing that up was just simply that you know I personally feel like it was too early for all three of my children to get Cell phones when they did and they all got them around basically like ninth grade But yeah, here's they weren't ready. But now with the phone aspect to be okay if it was just the phone Yes, but they were not prepared for what comes with the phone right but right the data Exactly, but he broke there's no he would have known that because cell phones became popular with our group Your parents have to raise you with a cell phone Correct it was not a thought dog. So like we're the first generation have to figure out how do you raise kids with social media?
Yeah, let's go. So I'm always candid. That's what I'm always candid about that and sharing that information because um I don't feel like it was like this big huge crazy mistake And I'm the worst dad in the world by giving my kids a phone at ninth grade. Yeah, I know kids that are getting phones in fourth grade Third grade, but my point in sharing that is to make people consider think about it.
I did this in ninth grade and this went wrong Yeah, bro. Okay. Let me give you another example my parents didn't have to grow up With with are we allowed to have a TV in our room or not? Right that was that what it was for cell phones today is what it was for TV.
You got a TV in your room Well, that's where I got to do support was it was watching TV. So like my parents didn't know no better Right, you know, I'm saying like how are they supposed to know cable did not exist when they were raising when they were being raised So like every every generation comes with this nuance of what are we gonna do next? And I think yes, I think part of it and this for anybody who is you know having to deal with social media and your kids and the whole Nine like If nothing else I want you to have grace for yourself. I know this not towards J.
Just clearly explain that Which I think is what I think is good, but you have to understand that Where we are now there is no explanation for there is no precedent for it. This is all we can do This has been the trend throughout all the generations No matter if it was the introduction of the radio to the introduction of internet doesn't matter It is still the same thing if at the core You are putting before your kids what is important? Christ community how if you put the core elements that will never change no matter what the vehicle platform is do they know how to love? Well, no matter no matter where they go in sports media college no matter Where it's at do they know who they are if you instill that stuff then what you're building is a person of character that can navigate spaces Even while making mistakes and be able to navigate these spaces well What I love is with the scripture says train them up in the way that should go Yeah, what the part that gives me is the part is that when they get older they will not depart from it Right, which means that they are going to be tempted to do so and they may have moments of I'm using a word here prodigality a prodigal Moment but where but where but like where's their center point?
What are they gonna gravitate back to? Yes, they're anchored. Where is their anchor? Where is there?
Bro, I need to pick a brain on that. I gotta preach on that in July, but that that right there is what are you anchoring your kids to? And that's what I can say is like nieces nephews perfectly my kids like Including us we have all had these moments of like what are you doing dog? Like it's been one of those like right?
Yeah, and not once have I ever doubted where their center point was Mm-hmm. You know what I'm saying? I've never doubted where I go I come on. You know come on.
Let's let's reset. Let's try it again But come back to the center we can refocus reset. Let's get back out there And so like that for me with social media you may have to you may have to make some decisions for your children for yourself For yourself So there's a lead by example for your parents your our parents need monitoring as much as our kids Yeah, that you know, uh, that was uh something that I felt like was was very important You just actually hint at it and kind of touched on it is if you if you're a parent and you have Um, you have already handed over the keys to social media to your child If you notice a change in behavior that is becoming detrimental to like if they're their actions and and their Their mindset is changing and being morphed by this social media Do not hesitate to pull the plug. Yeah Do it before it's too late Bro, because what you will find is sometimes Someone is actually being raised by the social media.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Do not allow a culture to raise your child Listen the culture the village.
Yes, the culture No, because the village knows the difference between what the culture can influence versus what the child needs In what places the child needs influence and hear me and even if you feel like you don't know what you're doing You still know better than the internet For sure for sure. You may be as a believer in the trust of village. You cannot trust the culture You cannot trust the culture because the culture changes too much It's always moving. Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely Absolutely. And I think this has been one of the best conversations. I think we've had And also we don't even stretch the surface. We're like an hour and a half and we need to stretch the surface But but like half in yeah, but I think that's one of those things where we need to have a group discussion about it Because I would love to have conversations with not only social media strategists, but you know I had to do a whole talk for the for le county Um, because you remember that um, yeah, the amount of parents that came to me Trying to figure out what the next step was let me know that like this is this is a this is an area that I feel like we really need help Um, and I feel like it does take a community of conversation Right community of conversation to make that happen.
And um, and this I think it's just introducing it And so yeah, you know, we probably didn't come up with an answer that was like hey, this is definitive Because I don't think there is a definitive answer. I think no teaching people how to navigate is it? I think I think the definitive answer was the one that you gave which was there's a testing ground There's a there's a there's a you have to prove to me your maturity of being able to handle. Yep Yeah, so it's not a yes or no.
It is a Maybe there's a gradual. Yeah, but when I'm testing whether you are prepared enough for this Are you going to use it as a tool or is it going to be a tool that uses you? That's the question Because so many people are being used by social media bro. They're being used No Any any last words you want to give to the people before we get about here?
No, man. Um, no I feel like I can I can I can bring to the table it just be a regurgitation or a reiteration of something. I've already said so Have a lego. It's all Yeah, I um, we drew the conversation We really want to know what y'all think we want to know we all that with it.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced some social media Exapanes but we want to know more about it conversation is going to continue And we're gonna have far more discussion about with other people so that we can get some different perspectives over but with that being said We'll be back another episode, man. And stay tuned in one more time. Oh, real quick. I want to promote something So in our comment section, we all think comments directly to us But I don't see comments back and forth between commenters.
Yeah, whichever To the people who comment feel free to comment on each other's comments to yeah, yeah We are part of what we're doing is trying to create community, right? And if we're creating community, you can't just talk to us Right. I talk to each other. That's right.
And we're basically like fight club in the comments, man So go ahead and let it lose I mean, honestly, I honestly want to get to the point where we will end up having like some kind of thing where we need moderators and all that kind of But that's you know, obviously that's far down the line, right? Because like we just talked about social media and social media. So, you know in the future if we end up having like major discussions I think we're gonna start putting our clips on our actual of social media accounts. Yep for twice born Um, and so that the comments could actually go there versus, you know, all the comments being on south cloud and stuff like that So anyway, just you know quick thoughts.
Matter of fact, we're gonna be starting our first community conversation first subject slavery go We're gonna talk to you guys about that later 12 years up Then we appreciate you all man. This is a bit of blast man. This is the bond Jay and we'll catch you on this next one one love for the young kids
