What this episode covers
One week ago today was election day here in New York for the 2020 primaries which had been delayed because of the Covid pandemic. And it was a big night for NYC-DSA endorsed candidates. While final results are still not yet in because of a large number of absentee ballots, incumbent candidates Congress woman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and State Senator Julia Salazar have decisive leads. State sentate candidate Jabari Brisport leads Tremaine Wright in the District 25 (Central Brooklyn) by nearly 3,000 votes, and Zohran Mamdani leads Aravella Simotas in Assembly District 36 (Astoria) by nearly 600. Marcela Mitaynes trails incumbent Felix Ortiz in Assembly District 51 (Sunset Park) by only 464 votes, where it appears that the presence of multiple progressive spoilers prevented what could have been a decisive victory against Ortiz. Phara Souffrant Forrest trails incumbent Walter Mosley in Assembly District 57 (Clinton Hill) by 588 votes. In New York's 15h Congressional district, NYC-DSA endorsed Samelys Lopez is further behind, in fourth place in a very fractured race. On today’s episode we’ll talk with Jabari Brisport about the election and also the hot topic of the day the NYC budget. NYC City council is expected to vote on the budget at 6pm today amidst growing calls for the NYPD to be defunded. We’ll hear from Jabari about what NYC-DSA is demanding and here from activists who have been at Occupy City Hall.
