SoftBank's Strategic Pivot: The OpenAI and ASI Investment Report

from The Money Lab · host Norse Studio

SoftBank Group (SBG) has demonstrated a dramatic return to profitability, reporting a net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥2,924,066 million for the six-month period ended September 30, 2025. This 190.9% year-on-year increase is primarily driven by the "AI boom," which has significantly boosted the valuation of its key holdings.Strategic Pivot to Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)SBG has redefined its business vision around the goal of realizing Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). Central to this strategy is a massive partnership with OpenAI. In March 2025, SBG committed to follow-on investments in OpenAI Global of up to 40billion(30 billion effective share for SBG after syndication). As of December 2025, SBG held an estimated 11% ownership interest in OpenAI.This shift includes a transition from "general-purpose hardware" to "super-intelligence" and supporting vertically integrated systems. This is exemplified by:• Project Stargate: A joint initiative with OpenAI to build next-generation AI data centers in the U.S..• Asset Liquidation: In October 2025, SBG liquidated its entire $5.83 billion stake in NVIDIA, moving its capital from chip suppliers to the models and infrastructure themselves.• Energy Focus: Recognizing that AI's "end-game" is energy, SBG and OpenAI have invested in SB Energy to establish renewable energy matrices for data centers.Segment Performance and Growth• SoftBank Vision Funds (SVF): The SVF segment recorded an investment gain of ¥3,415,482 million for the half-year. SVF2 alone logged a ¥1,891.8 billion gain related to OpenAI, including ¥980.5 billion in unrealized valuation gains on equity and ¥1,176.2 billion in derivative gains from the OpenAI Forward Contract.• Arm Segment: Arm continues to be a cornerstone of SBG’s AI strategy, reporting record net sales. Royalty revenue grew 22.9% (U.S. dollar-based), fueled by the transition to Armv9 technology, which offers roughly double the royalty revenue of its predecessor.• Robotics and Infrastructure: SBG is centralizing its robotics investments under Robo HD and has entered agreements to acquire Ampere (6.5billion)and∗∗ABB’sroboticsbusiness∗∗(5.375 billion) to strengthen its AI-powered robotics ecosystem.Financial Position and Shareholder ValueSBG has aggressively monetized assets to fund its AI ambitions. Beyond the NVIDIA sale, the group sold 40.2 million T-Mobile shares for $9.17 billion and completed the physical settlement of all Alibaba prepaid forward contracts and Deutsche Telekom collar transactions. The company's financial health remains stable, with a Loan-to-Value (LTV) ratio of 20.6% as of December 2025, well within its 25% safety threshold. To enhance shareholder value and expand its investor base, SBG announced a four-for-one share split effective January 1, 2026.Key RisksDespite current gains, some analysts caution that SBG's fortunes are now heavily concentrated in OpenAI, a private entity whose valuation gains are currently "paper profits". Furthermore, Arm’s quarterly licensing revenue occasionally misses analyst targets, highlighting the market's sensitivity to deviations in SBG's core AI assets.AI tools were used in the translation.
