The Somerton Man Identified: Australia's Greatest Mystery, Finally Solved? | The Tipsy Exchange

from The Tipsy Exchange | Movies, Mysteries & More Hosted by Berly Land

First the Zodiac cipher, then the Forrest Fenn treasure, and now this. All our favorite mysteries are getting solved! This week, LA brings an update on one of the most famous unsolved cases of all time: the Somerton Man. In 1948, a well-dressed man was found dead on a beach near Adelaide, Australia. He had no ID, the labels had been cut out of his clothes, and there was a tiny scrap of paper hidden in his pocket with two words torn from a rare book of Persian poetry. That book had a secret code and a nurse's phone number written in the back. And when that nurse was shown the body, her reaction was… suspicious. For decades, people have been convinced he was a Cold War spy. (Possibly a Russian ballet spy. We have our reasons.) Now, thanks to some seriously impressive DNA detective work, he finally has a name. So who was he? Let's just say the answer was not what we expected. And the more LA tells us, the more questions we have. Sure, we know who he was, but we still don't know why. Who poisoned him? Why was he so far from home? Why cut out all those labels? And why did he refuse to share his cigarettes? Headline writers, we need to talk. Plus, one small detail from his life that made us feel really bad for him. Along the way, you'll hear an explanation of cauliflower ear (and whether Chris Hemsworth would still be a 10 with it), a surprise Mitch Hedberg quote, a BuzzFeed Unsolved flashback, and a creepy Netflix documentary recommendation. There's also Berly's fantasy of Australian beach horsemen, and a Lion King quote hunt that did not go as planned. This week's toast: From Sherlock Holmes: "It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts." Cheers! And we close with a little wisdom from Mufasa. Kind of. Tell us what you think! Do you think the Somerton Man was a spy? Who do you think killed him, and why? And now that we know his name, is the case really solved? Tell us in the comments! Please drink responsibly.
