SONA Debate

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

The debacle between South African MP Boy Mamabolo of the ruling African National Congress and Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, has raised concerns over the use of Gender Based Violence to score political points. On Tuesday during SONA debate in Parliament, Mamabolo claimed that Malema abused his wife. And in response, Malema shocked Parliament when he claimed President Cyril Ramaphosa used to beat-up his late wife. Now, the fight between Malema and Mamabolo has reached a legal point. Malema and his wife Mantoa Matlala are each suing Mamabolo for one million rand. We speak to: • Selby Xinwa, Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation researcher • Ralph Mathekga, a political analyst • Felicity Harrison, head of Sustained Dialogues
