（岛呗 / シマ呗）在琉球语奄美方言中，“シマ”（shima）不仅是“岛”的意思，更包含“故乡”的意思；“呗”（うた / uta）则是“民谣”的意思。因此“岛呗”一词原本意思是“故乡的民谣”，而正是因为“シマ”一字特殊含义，许多奄美人不将这种歌谣写作“岛呗”，而是将它写作“シマ呗”。
