English SummaryToday, I want to share something a little personal.Recently, in a conversation with an HSP friend I met through Substack, the term “HSS-type HSE” came up — a temperament that seeks out stimulation and new experiences, while also being deeply sensitive and prone to exhaustion. A seemingly contradictory mix.I first learned this term about six months ago. The moment I did, something clicked: “Oh — this is me.”Over the years, I’ve changed jobs 12 times — childcare, elderly care, office work, DX support. “Why do I keep wanting to jump into new places?” “Why do I get so tired so easily?” For a long time, I treated these as two separate questions. But once I learned about this temperament, they suddenly connected into a single line.Diving into a new environment without hesitation, and throwing myself fully into whatever’s needed there — that’s something I consider a strength. In childcare, in elderly care, in DX support, I’ve often been told, “you adapt to new environments quickly.”But underneath that, I was likely spending more energy than I realized. “I have to try harder.” “I have to meet expectations.” Pushing forward like that, there were times I ended up completely worn out without noticing.Learning about this temperament didn’t change anything dramatically. But being able to think, “this isn’t a flaw in my personality — it’s just how I’m wired,” has let me be a little gentler with myself. These days, writing on both note and Substack, I’ve noticed more people than I expected who feel the same kind of exhaustion, or who identify as HSS-type HSP.“Drawn to new things, but exhausted so quickly” — I’ve carried that feeling myself, for a long time. I often blamed myself, thinking “I should be able to push through this.”But it turns out that was simply the temperament sometimes called a “hidden highly sensitive person” — HSS-type HSP. On top of that, I also carry the HSE trait — being sociable and outgoing. HSS-type HSE is said to be, among the four types, the one with the most seemingly contradictory traits.HSP is often divided into four types, based on two factors: whether someone is more introverted or extroverted, and whether they actively seek stimulation. Sensitive and introverted, without seeking stimulation. Sensitive but extroverted, without seeking stimulation. Sensitive and introverted, while still seeking stimulation. And sensitive, extroverted, and stimulation-seeking, all at once. I turned out to be that last type — the one holding the most contradictions.I’m still very much in the process of learning to live well with this temperament. But there’s a real difference between knowing and not knowing — it’s shifted how I relate to myself, even just a little.I’ll keep going at my own pace, with a stride that doesn’t ask too much of me. This is a public episode.
