Né à Chicago en 1949, Gil Scott-Heron a 19 ans quand il écrit son morceau le plus célèbre « The Revolution Will Not Be Televised » qui se veut une réponse ironique au morceau « When The Revolution Comes » des Last Poets qui plaisantaient en disant que les gens allaient regarder passer la révolution, assis devant leur télévision. Gil Scott-Heron développe un argumentaire plus complexe que les Last Poets. Elle est souvent mal décodée et considérée soit comme un appel à la révolte soit comme une simple critique de la télévision. Le texte du morceau est avant tout une liste de ce que la révolution ne sera pas, c’est une satire politique, une critique des médias de masse, à l'humour féroce.
