Souldisco | Saving the Music: Interview with Dan Johnson - Audio Engineer + Archivist

from Vinyl Community Podcasts · host vinylcommunitypodcasts

Nadine (Souldisco) is back with another great interview here on Vinyl Community Podcasts. This time she is speaking with Dan Johnson, owner of Audio Archiving Services. Affectionately known as “The Muffin Man” according to Michael Jackson (more on that), this Maryland native has over 20 years of experience as an audio engineer, having worked for legendary Los Angeles recording studios such as Ocean Way/United Recording, Capitol Records, and Record One. For almost a decade he has exclusively focused on tape-based audio archiving, and in the process become one of the foremost experts in audio archiving, including a stint as a featured panelist for NAMM and AES. During his career, he has transferred some of the best selling albums in history for record labels, producers, artists, and estates including over 10,000 reels consisting of almost every format from full track mono to 48 track digital. As Dan puts it: "Our goal at AAS is to provide our clients with the highest quality transfers, from their tapes to a more usable digital format. As an audio engineer, I understand the love and sacrifice that goes into creating the original recording, and it's my privilege to preserve the artists' legacies through the archival process". We trust that you will find this conversation insightful, interesting, and informative as we did!
