Les agrupacions multitudinàries de Blood Sweat & Tears i Chicago, cara a cara, anirant desplegant els seu repertori amb rèplica i contrarèplica a la recerca d'un empat definitiu. Ambdós casos representen les mostres més genuïnes del primer Jazz Rock mereixedor d'aquesta denominació. Les dues formacions estaven integrades per bandes que sumaven el format del grup pop bàsic (baix, bateria, guitarra, teclat i vocalista) amb les seccions de vent polifòniques a la manera del Jazz i del R&B.
