Hello, welcome back to another episode of Broken Record. My name is Ellie and I'm your host. This week we are going to talk about soundtracks because I feel like the soundtracks to movies are so important and key and are very special. And there's a couple new movies coming out with new soundtracks and I wanted to talk about some of my favorite songs from movies and I'm excited.
So the reason this episode is happening is because Olivia Rodrigo recently released a song for the new Hunger Games movie, Hunger Games The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. And her new song is called Can't Catch Me Now. And I love listening to it. I've had some time to listen to it.
She released it a little bit ago, but I love it so much. I think the production is really cool. I feel like it's very different from Olivia's other music. And I'm so excited to see it in the movie because I feel like it's so telling of the story and it gives me a good hint of what's going to happen in the movie.
But I also have no idea. So I'm excited to see where they place it in the film. And I'm really excited. I love the song.
It's so cool. And it's very Hunger Games-esque, which one would be hopeful. It would be because it's made for the Hunger Games. But the whole premise of the song is basically that the character may be physically away from another character, but they'll always be in the second character's mind.
Basically, I see it as an ex. If a girl breaks up with a guy and the girl goes away and betters herself and the guy's kind of sitting there sulking, the guy is always going to see news about the girl. People are always going to be talking about her next to him or she's going to be in the news or there's always going to be reminders of her for the guy. And so I think it's a really cool song and it's so incredible.
And I love the production because it doesn't add many extra elements besides a voice and instruments. There's no artificial anything. Or maybe artificial, they might have created the guitar in a program. But you know what I'm saying.
There's nothing very clearly fake. And so I love this song. I think it's so good. I love listening to it.
And another song that I want to talk about that also came from a movie that came out this year is Dance the Night by Dua Lipa. I love this song. I'm not a huge Dua Lipa listener. I like her music, but I just don't listen to it a lot.
And I love this song. I think it's so fun. And I think the story behind it is really cool as well because Dua Lipa, when she was making this song for the movie, Greta Gerwig is the director of the movie and she sent Greta the scene for the movie. And Dua Lipa basically had to take that scene and the scene that the song was going to be played in during the movie.
And so she got that scene that the song was going to be played during and she basically just had to create a song that matches the feel and matches the tempo. And I think that's so cool because usually, from my experience, even though I have no experience, but from what I've heard online about artists creating music and stuff, they usually either get a summary of the movie or they get a couple of scenes throughout the movie and they watch them and they're like, okay, I know what song I want to create. But Dua Lipa quite literally got one scene and was like, make a song that fits with this scene. And I think that's so cool and so challenging.
I feel like that would be so hard for a lot of artists to create a song that fits with that scene. But I don't know. I guess it's also smart because then the scene that Dance of the Night is in is just a classic dance scene. And I feel like the dance scene, if you see the dance scene isolated, you would be able to create a completely different song than if you see the dance scene with the whole movie, then you might want to change the song to get out other themes.
So I guess it's kind of smart that Greta did that, but I feel like it's really interesting. I don't know. I think it's cool. The whole process of creating music for a TV show or for a movie is so crazy to me because I feel like it just takes a whole different time because I feel like a lot of artists draw from real life scenarios.
They write very nonfiction songs, but you're quite literally creating a fiction song for a movie and you have to draw from like, you have to make up what the thing is. And I don't know. I think it's really cool. Yeah.
So the next movie I want to talk about, movie franchise, I guess I should say, is James Bond. The songs that come out of James Bond movies are always just so, so incredible, so crazy. And it's just insane the songs that are created because of that movie franchise. And so one of my favorites from the James Bond franchise, one of my favorite songs that has come out of that is from Paul McCartney and Wings.
I love it so much. The song is called Live and Let Die. It is the craziest. It's so cool.
And I actually, I am so very lucky and I had the opportunity to hear the song live. Paul McCartney did a tour a couple of years ago and he came to Seattle and he performs Live and Let Die and it was so good. It was so good. It was crazy.
He had pyrotechnics during the song and it just, it was insane. And I forever love Paul McCartney and hearing that song live was just insane and I love it. But yeah, I love, love, love Live and Let Die. But yeah, James Bond, the franchise in itself has had so many like iconic artists perform, not perform, but like have a song, like create a song for the franchise.
Like obviously Paul McCartney, there's also been like Carly Simon, Madonna, Duran Duran, Joe Crow, Alicia Keys, Adele, Billie Eilish. Like there's so many crazy people who have created James Bond songs and I love them. Obviously I said Adele and Billie Eilish created songs for James Bond. I love both of those songs.
Adele created Skyfall and Billie Eilish created No Time to Die. And I think both of those songs are just so amazing and I love listening to them. Even just like, I separate them from the James Bond movies and they're like still incredible songs. The production is amazing.
I just think like James Bond songs are just so iconic. Like you can't really go wrong. But yeah, I love, I love those songs. Those three specifically are so good.
The next one I want to talk about is from Do the Right Thing. That's a Spike Lee film and the song is called Fight the Power by Public Enemy. And so Public Enemy actually, Spike Lee asked them to create a song for the film and they did. And it's such a good song.
It's really interesting and fun. Like the beat of it is really fun. And it's really cool how in the movie, the song, because I feel like with most soundtrack songs, they play it once in the movie and it's kind of done. But for Fight the Power, they play it repeatedly throughout the film, but they never play it in full.
And so I think that's really cool. Because like you hear the classic like Fight the Power like theme throughout the film. And you're like, what is this song? Like are we going to hear the rest of it?
But you never do. And I think that's so cool. And like a great way to kind of draw the audience to listen to it outside the film and to kind of discover the artist, even though they don't really need to be discovered as a public enemy. But, you know, just a little extra advertisement is fun.
The next two songs I want to talk about are from the same franchise again. I don't really know if you could call it a franchise, maybe just like a movie and its sequel. However, I'm not sure. But I want to talk about Top Gun because the songs that have come out of Top Gun are iconic.
The main two I want to talk about are from the first movie, Top Gun. The first one is Danger Zone. And then I also want to talk about Top Gun Maverick and I Ain't Worried by One Republic. I love both of those songs.
They're so fun. I think that I Ain't Worried just like absolutely took off when Top Gun Maverick came out. And obviously, obviously, Danger Zone did as well. But it was I wasn't alive when Danger Zone took off.
But I was here for I was here when I Ain't Worried got crazy popular and famous. And it was really cool to see because I feel like I'm trying to remember. But I think that was one of the first songs from a movie that really like took off that I can remember. But I'm not.
Obviously, there's been other movies like that had songs that were taken off that had taken off. But I don't know. That's like that's like one of the ones where I'm like, yes, like that is a movie song. But like went crazy after.
But yeah, I think it's so fun. And obviously, there's a couple honorable mentions that we have to talk about. Even though they're not really honorable mentions, they're mentions in themselves. But obviously, Footloose from the movie Footloose.
Ghostbusters from the movie Ghostbusters. Like there's so many good songs that like we could this episode could be like 10 hours long. We only have time for one more. And I want it to be from the movie Elvis.
The song is Vegas by Doja Cat. I love this song so much. It's very different than like the regular type of music that I listen to. But I love listening to it.
It's so fun. And I don't know. It's like it's just like I don't know what drew me to it because I don't usually listen to that type of song. But I just think it's really fun.
And I love listening to it. And I feel like it's just such a funny juxtaposition for putting a like crazy high production, like almost rap song in a movie about like someone who was doing like country and like pop. And like, I don't know. I think it's so funny to put like that type of song in a movie about Elvis.
That just like doesn't even fit the timeline. But I don't know. It's fun. Yeah.
