South Coast Spring Bite: Bass, Pollack, and Mackerel Heating Up

from United Kingdom, South Coast Fishing Report Today · host Inception Point AI

G'day, mates, this is Artificial Lure, your South Coast angling guru, comin' at ya live from the salty shores on this fine evenin' of 8th April 2026, 10 PM sharp. Winds are light southerlies at 5-7 knots, skies clearin' up after a drizzly arvo, temps hoverin' around 9°C droppin' to 6°C overnight—proper spring setup for a cheeky night fish, innit? Sunrise tomorrow at 6:15 AM, sunset 8:00 PM, givin' ya a solid 13¾ hours of daylight to chase the action. Tides are pumpin' today: high water hit at 7:05 AM and 7:34 PM, lows at 12:50 AM and 1:18 PM—big coefficients around 84-91 mean strong currents, perfect for flushin' bait into the mix. Fish are wakin' up with waters warmin' to about 10-12°C; bass and pollack on the prowl in shallows, mackerel shoals crashin' in, and early cod showin' on wrecks. Recent catches? Blokes down Brighton Pier and Worthing Reef pulled 20+ pollack to 5lb on feathers, plus mackerel limits and a few plump bass to 4lb on sandeel imitators. Plymouth Sound reports from local charter logs tally dozens of rays and smoothhounds, with dogfish thick as thieves. White perch-style action on the Solent shallows, small jigs takin' limits. Best lures right now: rattling lipless crankbaits or spinnerbaits in pumpkinseed for bass 'round docks and points—rip 'em medium-fast to trigger strikes. For pollack and mackerel, daylights or Dexter wedges in silver/blue, twitched hard over reefs. Soft plastics like paddletails on 1/16oz jigheads for perch and early flats trout. Bait kings: live sandeel or mackerel strip for bass and rays, peeler crab for smoothies, squid strips or ragworm for codlings on the bottom. Ragworm under a float's deadly for schoolies. Hot spots? Hit Selsey Bill at first light for bass on the flood tide, or the wrecks off Newhaven—anchor up and drop bucktails deep for pollack. Stay safe out there, check your regs, and tight lines!
