South Lakes and New Zealand Forward Merrick Rillstone

In this episode, I’m joined by Merrick Rillstone, a 6'6" powerhouse for the defending champions, South Lakes High School. With his long wingspan and standout play alongside four-star recruit Jordan Scott, Merrick has helped lead the Seahawks to a 10-2 start this season. Merrick takes us on a journey from his roots in New Zealand, where he first learned the game of basketball, to leaving his family behind to live with a host family and attend school in Reston, Virginia. We explore the contrasts between basketball in New Zealand, international hoops, and the game here in the U.S., as well as how Coach Mike Desmond has played a key role in improving Merrick’s defense to the next level.
