Sowing and Reaping - Fr. Micah - October 27, 2024
from Holy Trinity + Holy Cross - Sermons · host Holy Trinity + Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral
This Sunday, Fr. Micah spoke on generosity. He quoted 2 Corinthians 9, starting in verse 6, in which St. Paul says, “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly.” Fr. Micah points out that, even if we sow just a little — give just a little, pray just a little — we will see the fruit. However, those who wish to sow bountifully will have an incalculable harvest. We see this bountiful sowing in the life of the martyrs, who gave up everything, even their lives. Fr. Micah gives the example of St. Demetrios, whom we celebrated this past Saturday. St. Demetrios gave up his position, his wealth, and his life. In the end, he continued to glorify God as the soldiers came upon him.Fr. Micah reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God. Even still, we can practice reciprocal generosity, which is at the heart of our faith. We see this in the Eucharist, which comes from the Greek word for “thanksgiving.” Our Lord gives us the Eucharist, and we offer it to him. He receives the gift, and he sends his spirit upon it, giving us the very body and blood of his Son.
