Spanish–Moro conflict

In this episode, we explore the Spanish–Moro conflict, a centuries-long struggle between the Spanish Empire and the Islamic sultanates of the southern Philippines. Beginning in the 1500s, Spanish efforts to expand colonial and religious control met fierce Moro resistance, fueled by guerrilla warfare, naval raids, strategic alliances, and leaders such as Sultan Kudarat and Datu Piang. The episode highlights how the Moros defended their autonomy against repeated Spanish campaigns, using both military skill and regional trade networks to sustain resistance. Rather than ending in a decisive Spanish victory, the conflict persisted until 1898, when American forces arrived and transformed the struggle into a new phase of colonial confrontation.
