Speaking Startup: The pandemic's toll on a tourism town

from Business Brief · host Missouri Business Alert

In the small Missouri River town of Hermann, winemaking is big business. So is the tourism surrounding that wine industry. The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated tourist traffic, presenting a new — and potentially existential — threat for small wineries looking to carve out their niche. “This is probably our 2020 version of prohibition, when Hermann obviously made some huge changes," said Tammy Bruckerhoff director of tourism and economic development for the town.  On this week's podcast, we check in with Hermann's winemakers to get a sense of how they are faring as tourist traffic has dried up. Plus, in the mist of a statewide stay-at-home order that has led to many businesses temporarily closing their doors, the owners of gyms and fitnesses businesses have tried to find ways to make up for lost revenue. For many, that has meant a move online.
