Welcome to a special edition of the Detroit CDFC FanCast. I am John Malino Flying Solo. We're going to do something a little bit different today and have a very quick podcast, and it's basically going to be one interview with the man of the hour. That being said, before we get to that, I do very quickly want to say that we always have a tradition and we dedicate these podcasts, so I'm not going to break that tradition.
And my dedication today is to Jeremy Clark and Brett Mullen and Alex Blanek and every other man who's suited up, put on big puffy gloves for Detroit CDFC as keepers. Guys, we love all of you, but you are about to be supplanted in the hearts of the supporters as the most popular keeper ever to play for the city. We'll be right back. I'm joined today by the director via phone from the wilds in northern Michigan, Andrew Chataway, who is the focus of a significant social media campaign by supporters to get him in goal for the upcoming DPS showcase.
Drew, how are you doing? I'm good, man. How are you? Doing good.
So this was a little bit of a surprise to you, huh? Yeah, I woke up this morning and found out that everyone wanted me to play goal, and I was like, all right, I'm game. So just to be clear, you have, in fact, played keeper before, correct? I do have extensive experience in the arts of goalkeeping, mainly from my sub-18-year-old days.
So it has been a while, but I do still have it. I did try out for DCFC back in March. So, yeah, I can hang with the best of them. I remember seeing you at the tryouts, and I mean, to my semi-untrained time, my sister was a high school keeper, so I have a feeling for it.
You weren't embarrassing yourself out there. Did Cesar or anybody else give you sort of any feedback on the tryouts of where they thought you stood among the various people who gave it a shot? So, you know, I'm not going to say that they said a whole lot about that, but I could see it in their eyes that, you know, they wanted me bad, but they just, you know, for whatever reason, they decided not to. But I knew that they wanted me.
I could tell. It was really political, correct, because they wanted, like, an international goalkeeping core or something like that. Yeah, it was something weird like that. You know, and I can respect that, and I'm not mad about it.
And, you know, everything will be forgiven if they put me in goal on September 19th against Tanner for FC. So, I mean, are you... Whatever they're calling themselves now. I think this is a different one.
This isn't the men's team with the defender who looks like a Cialis commercial, not the AFC at Arbor. So, are you demanding the full game, or would you be satisfied with a half? I mean, what are we talking here? I'll take a half.
I'd love the full game. I'd love to try and get that clean sheet, but, you know, whatever they feel appropriate, I'm okay with. So, if you did play the first half, I mean, understandably, if you were playing the second half, you wouldn't want to spend yourself in the sports stance, but normally we know you from the stands among the Northern Guard there. If it were a function of if you were playing the first half, would we expect you in the stands in the second half, you know, in your keeper gear?
You know, I haven't really thought that hard about it. I'm really just trying to get my mind wrapped around the idea that I'm going to be, you know, starting a goal, and I really just, I don't know, I don't know what I'm going to do. I've been actually proud of that. There's just something for the whole game, but I don't have to figure it out.
That's probably the best way. That's probably the best way to do it. Yeah, I mean, if you want to win, that's probably what you're going to do anyway, so. Yeah, that's important.
So, okay, well, I mean, you know, I'm a big fan. We're all big fans of Alex Blaineck, but, you know, I'm sure he could find another team to catch on with. And by no means, right, and by no means do I, do I mean to take away from what, you know, the greats like Brett Mullen and Bully and Neck have done. But they are both great keepers.
The save against Lansing United right before halftime is going to be an iconic moment in Detroit City FC history. So, you know, I don't mean to step on toes here, but, you know, I've been waiting in the polls, and I want my shot. And, you know, if there's a chance to take it, I'm going to take it. All right, one last question for you.
During the Windsor Stars friendly, the former city keeper, city keeping legend Jeremy Clark was out there, and he actually took a shot at the end of the game. He came so far up that he was actually able to, I think he might have had a shot on the score sheet. Would you be looking for the same kind of thing? Would you want to try to not only get a clean sheet, but maybe score a goal or get an assist?
So I was, in fact, in a game when I was, this was a couple years ago, first game of the season, we were losing 3-2. None of those goals were my fault, for the record. And I actually did take an opening, and I made a run down the entire field. And not only did I get a shot off, but I buried that shot, and we were able to draw a level and survive the game.
And then I had to run all the way back to my net and make another save, which was also pretty harrowing, if I may say so myself. Well, it's very clear that, just from listening to you, that you've got the core attribute that any keeper needs to have was that none of those goals were your fault. So you've got that nailed down, all the rest is details. So, hey, Genway, thank you very much for joining us for the special edition of the podcast.
We, I think, I think I speak for all three of us, mostly because I didn't ask Sean and Dean for their opinions, so I'm just going to speak for the three of us when I say we wholeheartedly support the Drew for Keeper movement. We hope everybody else will, and that we get to see you in between the pipes on, what was it, September 13th at the DPS Showcase, and not playing for Cast Hacker Run, it's actually great for City. September 19th, yeah, that would be great. It would be pretty cool.
Thanks, man, take care. No problem, too. So there you have it. It is Andrew Chadaway, the People's Keeper.
It's clear that that's what we need to really finish the season off in style. On September 19th at the DPS Showcase, tweet at DetroitCityFC, let them know that it's Chadaway or we riot. He's already said on Twitter that either he's in goal or he streaks, so he's getting on the pitch either way, and if you've ever seen Drew, I think we're all better off watching him play goalie than naked. So thanks to Drew for this.
Thanks to City in advance for letting him live out his dream and the dream of all supporters by getting out there and playing for his beloved Grusion Gold. I am John Malzina at JohnMoz. We are at DCFCFC on Twitter, DCFCFC.com, DCFCFancast on Gmail, and we'll see you soon. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Thank you.
